Did my oil change tonight. My 3.5 yr old helped. Oil was pretty much black, kind of translucent. No bad smell.

It will be dirty for the first few changes will all the machining residue and with the transmission gears wearing together.

It took about 2000 miles before I stopped seeing tiny metal specs in the oil.

Change it again in about 500kms.

I am due again for a change.

The front fork steering nut seems to be tight. No play there, yet there is a bit of grease running out the bottom.
I guess I will have a local bike shop take a look at it. I need the front tire changed any way, so they might as well look at the fork bearing issue to.

The down shifting problem is becoming a real pain. The bike won't downshift right unless I slightly engage the clutch between down shifts. If I come to a stop before I get to first, I can't get to first with out fiddling with the shifter and the clutch lever. I should be watching the traffic and the lights. If I don't giggle it while I'm in first and the stop light, it sometimes pops out of first because it didn't quite get all the way there during the downshifting. That is down right embarrassing and dangerous if the guy behind me ends up on me.

Any suggestions?
I was thinking I might have the same or a similar problem Mountainwolf had with the fix he posted on March 20th 2008.

You may just need to adjust the clutch cable.

Try that before you spend money at the shop.

I believe it would be tighten it so that it releases the clutch more when you pull the lever in.

This may not be your problem, but most likely the cable was not adjusted properly with it left the box.

Just rolling the bike back a foot can help find a gear. I don't want this to turn into an oil thread, but what oil are you using, squish?

I'm using Formula 1 by Motomaster (Canadian Tire Brand) Premium 4-Stroke Motorcycle Oil 20w50, it is not synthetic.

I looked closely at how the cable moves when I release the clutch lever. It "seems" to not come back exactly all the way to the engage position. I mean the cable, not the lever, where it connects to the bike trans lever. The lever can come back (engage) a slight amount more. Could that be that the cable needs to be lubed up? How is that done?
The shifting was wonderful before 350km (215miles), not so good now after 450km (280miles).

If you are basing that advice on posts read here, don't believe it. There is not "shipping oil" in these bikes. I have never even heard of such a thing. It is a cheap oil, no doubt, but it is fine for initial break-in. I'm sure if there was, then the bikes would come with a big "CHANGE THE OIL BEFORE RUNNING: SHIPPING OIL IN ENGINE" warning sticker. Your clutch handle should have some free play. But if it has too much play it won't fully ingage the clutch when shifting. I think you might need a clutch cable adjustment. If it's minor just back the adjuster at the handle...outward away from the handle. That should engage your clutch more.

Cable lube, (the way I did it is probably wrong, but) I took the cable end out of the lever, I held the end vertical, and ran about 6 drops of 3 in 1 oil down the wire. I could have got a cable luber and proper cable lube, but I'm cheap. I was told that any lube is better than no lube at all. :wink:

I'm experiencing some hard shifting too, like the shifter is stuck. Not the same bike as you though. I've only had the problem since I switched back to dino oil from synth. Once your bike is broken in, you might like to try synth. I didn't intend to suggest that you were using the original oil that the bike was shipped with. Re-post after the adjust and let us know.

As for the steering, can you get the bike up on a box, front tire off the ground. Get someone to hold the bike for you. Go to the front and grab the forks with both hands. Pull toward and push away several times. If your steering has free play you will feel it with this test. Let us know.

I lubed up the cable with 8 drops of 3 in 1 oil just to be sure. The clutch lever doesn't have an adjuster, so I used the adjuster at the engine. 1.5 turns I think. I took a drive to see a couple of clients and only had it pop out once from 1st gear at a light. I think it was a bit better this time. It "seems" to be getting caught or hung up a bit inside the bike. Like on the edge of something. That is why I thought about the other clutch fix I mentioned earlier.
I will give it another turn and try again latter on. Some pics too but my gallery doesn't let me in. Can someone fix that?
