They discourage placing a cache on private property!

I was wondering about this, though I am sure there are some, because I was looking, there are some less then half a mile from here, and it says they are in a "generic field", wich loosely translates to private property...

Though I don't have a gps so I cant go look.

There are lots of them on private property, they are just placed with permission.
Try getting the coordinates & plugging them into google earth, you may be able to find some that way. Some people don't even use a gps, they mark the coordinates on a topo map & use a compass.

Jim, you might be able to map it online

I know, not the same as walking around with a handheld GPS!

Hey both good ideas, thanks.

I may have to find a gps, but I want one I can use on the roads aswell with my other bike, and trails with this one.. And I don't want to spend a fortune...

I will look at your ideas, thanks.

Hey Jim, a lot of people use the basic etrex for geocaching. I think you can find them new in 70 dollar range. No memory for maps though. I like my legend because the price was pretty good, I was able to load local topo maps on it, & it shows my speed & location on the map as I drive.

I just checked, amazon has the legend for 124.41 & no shipping. That's a pretty good deal.

We've been geocaching for a couple of years now with a Magellan Meridian Gold. Friend has a $50 special from a pawn shop. Ours will usually get us within 10-15 feet of the target, his about 20-25 feet. Our kids also enjoy it. We'll let them carry the gps and take the lead then when we get close everyone starts looking. The wife was standing on a huge boulder in VA searching for one and our 15 year old walked up and pointed it out at her feet inside a fissure in the rock.

Hey, MadMaximum, just wanted to let you know that you've started me on a new hobby! Took the 6yo stepdaughter geocaching...1 was within a couple blocks of our house. Couldn't find the next 5, but it was pouring rain & lots of 'muggles' were about. The last one I had scheduled was named "Easter Egg Hunt", and it was perfect! Plastic eggs with coordinates for the next egg in the series. The kid was thrilled; she found them! LOL Went back online when we got home & read the logs; now I'm ready to go look again for the ones we missed.

Thanks for a new hobby!

MadMax....

I echo The Otherides sentiments... we got a new hobby.. The youngster thought it was great.. An electronic device other than a video game that he could use to hunt treasure.. Actually got him off the couch!!!

PS. we made two cache finds yesterday and actually met some very experienced cachers along the way one with over 2350 finds and one with 648 finds.. it was cool..

Thanks fer the tip!!

I'm glad you folks are enjoying it. Just one more excuse to get out & enjoy the great outdoors. I installed a handlebar mount for my gps, so my official geocaching vehicle is my bike. Makes it nice for the ones way out in the boonies!

I tied the GPS to the bike today to check the speedo. only 2mph off.

Anyway if the weather is nice tommorrow I am taking some kids on this one.

I just notice it had some travel bugs. Can't take the bike with 3 kids though.

Finally got a GPS and Randi and I have been Geocaching the last two days, found 3 caches and had lots of fun riding the bikes around. Yesterday Randi made a mount for the GPS on my handlebars so today we will have to check it out. Thanks for a great hobby.
