Yea, that seems to be the simplest solution. I may end up doing the same, but for now the stock pegs will do me just fine. I am more concerned with getting the bike on the road than I am with how awesome my foot pegs are.

The annoying thing is, the first set I ordered, the CRF230 pegs, would actually work perfectly if the hole in them was moved just a little bit.. I kind of wish I could order a set with the holes not drilled.

Weld the holes up and redrill them.

But where they attach to on the bike is steel.

True. Either way, either by shim or by plug and drill, it is not a simple bolt on affair.

Heat treating aluminum isn't that hard... If you look it up, unless it's some complex, pricey alloy, it isn't too hard. For example, 4041 to T6 is only like 10 hours at 500° F, off of the top of my head.

Solution heat treatment is 980 degrees for up to an hour - basically bringing it as close to melting point as you can without it losing form/becoming a liquid, known as a solid solution - and then a quench. That will give you T4

Aged heat treatment for a T6 temper is 400 for 1 hour, 350 for 5 hours, or 325 for 8 hours, followed by a controlled cooldown.

The issue is, this process can greatly distort or deform the material. That is why a lot of aluminum parts made from tempered aluminum tend to be machined - the temper is unaffected.

By welding, thus unevenly heating the pieces, with reaching liquid state at the weld site, and degraded heating the further away from the weld site, means that there is multiple variations in the structure and distribution of material in the alloy. Even if you put it back through a temper process, you will never restore it to true T6 temper, especially around the weld site, without going through the T4 process again.

Aluminum is the material I have worked with the most in my life, both in welding, machining, and processing.

move the hole on the steel part.

I may actually do this, but at a later date if I do. As I said before, at this point I just want to get the bike on the road and the stock pegs work well enough for now.

The issue with simply drilling a new hole is that the holes on the CRF pegs are only offset from the factory holes by about 5-6mm, so I can't simply drill new ones because the holes overlap. That means I need to fill the existing holes before drilling the new ones. Not really a big deal, just a bit more involved than I was hoping for.

Once the set of KLR pegs I ordered arrives, I am going to see what I can work with on those. Even if they are also too far away, their design also means that I could potentially add an "adjuster" bolt much like the Fastway aftermarket pegs use for their "adjustable camber" feature. I have no qualms with that method.

Like I said before, the whole point of the peg experiment isn't about making any old set work. Fabrication and welding isn't the issue, hell I do it all the time at work. What I am after is a solution that others can potentially copy at home with basic tools that most people have laying around.

It might be a strange concept to some of us here, but there are guys out there that don't have a welder, or even know how to weld. If it hasn't been obvious from the start, I am sharing everything I do with the primary focus of it being simple and inviting. I want to attract people into the idea that you can modify your bike for the better without needing access to a machine shop - which I do.

Let's face it, anybody here can likely convince somebody to buy a Hawk 250. The cheap price is attractive. What isn't attractive for many buyers out there, beyond the misconception that these bikes are junk, is the lack of support - either factory or aftermarket.

Heck, look at my fork valve video just as an example. I found a way to address one of the weak points of the Hawk, the suspension, with an off the shelf part. I explained what was needed - showing that most of it can be obtained at a hardware store - and why in the simplest way I knew how, and I actually got quite a few messages about it. It's not a "cheap" mod by Chinariders standards considering the valves are $100, but compared to the cost and other unknowns of a fork swap - something most people have probably entertained - it's a cheap way to really make the most out of what is already there. For most people riding a Hawk, it's probably all they will ever need, and if setup right along with a fork brace and the proper preload on the springs, will probably outperform any other CB out there short of the more expensive stuff from SSR or Pitster.

Anyway, ending rant lol.

I almost think my employer is out to try and prevent me from working on my bike. THe good news is, overtime is back. The bad news is, they want me to work both of my days off, and it will probably be like this for a while. I am working on a compromise with my boss so I can have at least 1 day off a week otherwise I will never get anything done.

I won't even get into the special kind of hell my job has become lately. That rant could go on for pages....

Down to the point now I just need to do the exhaust, oil cooler, tires, and brush guards. Two I can do now, the others I await parts for.

As far as the intake setup. This is it for now. Further tweaks to come, but it works. I need to shorten up the metal tubing I used to adapt the air filter so I can shorten that side of the elbow some more, and I need to obviously figure out a better place for the breather.
