Not the face, but the chest. It was still lit too. No lights though.

As far back as the Jimmy Carter Administration (1976-1980), Joan Claybrook, head of the NHTSA, stated she wished she had the power to outlaw motorcycles! However, since she could not do that, she merely restricted motorcycle speedometers to indicate a top speed of 85 mph. She also allegedly tried to mandate pressure switches on motorcycle seats, so the engine would shut off if the rider stood up, along with seat belts. Do you remember that, Doc?

http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/for...rs/7829/page1/

Don't you just love people who wish to control the lives of others? Joan Claybrook didn't want to ride a motorcycle, and considered them dangerous; therefore, she wished to ban everyone from riding them! Her actions are typical of the socialist mindset.

If someone wishes to smoke cigarettes, it is his right to do so, as long as he does not endanger the lives of others, or their property.

Once again, Brother Spud, you and I are on the same page. Same foundation, in fact.

Yes I totally remember her, and as I recall, she was a credible threat.

I tried desperately to stay out it, but there's a couple of points to be raised here:

I'm not a "smoker" or a "biker" or a "social drinker" I'm a person, dang it anyways! And I'm bloody well tired of being a second-class citizen, because of my habits, and likes!

At least here, we tolerate people who try to break up our country (Serperatists, Bloc Quebecois, et all.)

We tolerate a pathetic excuse for an education our children get (What percentage can't read beyond a Grade 5 level in Grade 12?)

We tolerate Working 12 hours a day, and spending 2 hours with our kids, who call their babysitters, "Mommy."

We tolerate inconsiderate bastages of all stripes, telling *our* Government how to run *Our* country (Lobby groups, SpI Groups)

But God help me if I light a cigarette out on the street!

No SIR! No tolerance for you! You're not even a person entitled to the same rights and freedoms as everyone else anymore! No! You're a bloody "Smoker!" We hate you and your kind with a passion that knows no bounds! There's no place in our country for an evil, narcississtic, self-absorbed countenance such as yourself! You stink, you're giving us and our children cancer, you're the scourge of the entire western world, and the only thing that gives us solace is the fact that every cigarette you smoke take 10 minutes off of your pathetic, weak-willed miserable existence!

Well. Thank you. I was not aware. Here all these years, I thought cigarettes were good for me, and they had Calcium and Riboflavin in them!

Yes, I'd like to quit. Yes I'd like my children to never see me light up when I'm in my garage, Yes I'd like to be able to taste my wife's cooking (I think) yes, It would probably be nice to smell like CarbKleen and 5w40, instead of CarbKleen, 5w40 *and* Cigarettes! And Yes, I'd bloody well like to have the $3650 I could spend on my wife and children, whom I love dearly.

But I can't.

Because I made a stupid decision 18 years ago. Not overly proud of that one, but there it is.

And maybe some of you could stop wearing "Old Spice?" I mean, that's disgusting! It smells like rotting doughnuts! Why would you want to smear that around on your skin? Do you know what they use to make that stuff? I can't believe people think it's okay to let their children go around smelling that crap all day!

See? I can play that game too. Maybe once we all back off a little bit and leave each other alone, maybe I'll quit with the cigarettes, and you all can quit with the nasty after-shaves.

Then all of us will go and gang up on people who eat curry.

***

That was pretty intense. I'm think I'm going to go have a smoke, and settle down a little bit.

Vince, that was very entertaining.

I'd never challenge your right to smoke, nor would I ever give you a hard time about it (just ask TurboT). I used to smoke, but I refuse to be a "former smoker".

That said, I'd like to eat my meal without being surrounded by smoke. I'd also like to get where I'm going without my clothes smelling like smoke. That's all I ask.

No, just gas, oil, and maybe a nice mixture of dirt and bear shit you landed in when you flew off your ride!

This sounds good to me.

I mentioned in my first post, that I would "be perfectly happy to see it banned", that's not to say I am actively lobbying for this. In fact I don't care what a smoker does in their own home. I do like the way it is in BC now for the most part where like W&G mentioned, I can go out for a meal or out in public without being completely surrounded by it. I think the way it is in BC is pretty good, with the exception of the cigarette butts absolutely everywhere.

I didn't start this topic to suggest anyone is a second class citizen, I started it because it kept getting brought up as a sidetrack in the healthcare topic.

Vince, it sounds though like your not very happy to be a smoker, and would probably be happy if in the future, your children or their children didn't look back and say the same thing about a "stupid decision 18 years ago" because the information available at the time, the media, and the attitude towards smoking had changed in a way that made it unpopular and they didn't have the pressure to start in the first place?

I don't think we need to ban it. My is better spent on educating people to not start.

I don't care if someone is smoking outside, in their car/home, etc. Just don't be inconsiderate of others.

I did some more checking on smoking in GA. A bar/restaurant that is only open to those over 18 can allow smoking. Essentially clubs. They feel that only adults who can make their own choice can choose to go it or not.

No problem with me. I don't visit those places.

I don't look down on smokers either. I am sure alot wish they never started.

Thank you all for taking my rant in the humorous/quasi serious vien it was intended. After re-reading, I can see where I came off as uber-aggressive. But nonetheless, when the media picks up their anti-smoking chant, it really makes me feel as above...

Mr Grind: Thank you for not being an "Evangelical Non-smoker!"

Striking emotion out of the picture, Banning cigarettes, hyper-education, ultra restrictive laws, etc. are the absolute *worst* thing anyone could do to try to reduce smoking. I mean, look at how well the "War on drugs" is going!

Especially if we are talking teenage smokers, banning something, or making it "Unheathy" just adds to the "Rebel" factor, and that's Exactly why I started.

Now, to be a little bit pro-active. I personally gaurantee, If you forcedmy high-school Calculus teacher, my mom, my dad, Brian Mulroney, and Steve Buscemi to smoke, I would never have started, 'cause I thought they were all terminally lame.

The point I'm getting at is, The information that smoking is unhealthy, smelly and expensive has been out there since 1962. It changed nothing. Tabacco companies have been banned from advertizing in the media for 20 years now, and nothing has changed. Every pack I buy has a Ginormous picture of rotting teeth, diseased hearts, black lungs, and limp cigarettes, and it does nothing. Just bought myself a nice Silver case.

Maybe that's my role in life? I figure, as long as I keep walking around in Levi boot cuts, Doc Martens, and Vaguely "Cop" hair (Brylcreem is your friend!) talking about Russian Watches, "Star Trek" and Chinese Atv's, with John Player's Finest in the Driver's corner of my mouth, Maybe it will cause terminal lameness in the eyes of the teens, and discourage them.

Because the current way of doing things ain't working.

And seriously, would people please lay offf the "Old Spice?" I mean that's disgusting, and it hangs in the air after you leave for hours! I mean, seriously people!

Getting to the "Second class citizen" thing, well I have a pretty good example.

I don't get the same healthcare as the Non's do.

It's true. Everything that goes wrong with me, is all because I smoke, apparently. Not the fact that I stomp around on bare concrete for 10 to 12 hours a day, not the CarbKleen and Varsol inhalation, not the repetitive anti-freeze baths, none of that. Cigarettes. That's my whole problem right there, aparently.

The way the various docs tell it, aparently I can keep stomping around on bare concrete, inhaling class "a" carcinogens, soaking myself with ethylene glycol, and live to be 102 as long as I quit smoking. Hmm. Sounds like a little bit of a candy-corn solution to me.

I smoke, they don't want to deal with me. I get it. Whatever. The door rate for working on Lexus' and Jaguars just went up a little bit.

I dunno. It seems to me that this topic stirs passions on both sides. You know how hard it is to try to defend smoking? Try it sometimes, it's not easy...

One of my pet peeves is people who throw their (still burning!) cigarette butts out of car windows... If one ever lands on me, I'll make them eat it!

...Butt ( ) on a lighter ( ) note...one of the funniest sights I've ever seen was a guy smoking a cigarette while riding his bike... He had his visor open and the cigarette was burning like a dynamite fuse!
