Starter One Way Drive Clutch
Here are pictures of the main pieces of my starter one way clutch.
What I am not figuring out, is the rivets that are on there, are they holding the drive clutch on since I have removed the 3 bolts that are supposed to hold it on? If that is the case, then do I have to drill out the rivets to replace the one way drive clutch? I have never seen that type of one way clutch, but the one's I have seen you just unbolt it from the flywheel and it falls right off. The one's on the VMC website have no rivets, so I have a feeling it may be one of more of the sprags keeping it on. Maybe try putting the flywheel in a vice and turning the one way clutch the opposite direction of the arrow etched on there.

is it off the crank?
the sprag clutch allows the flywheel to free spin unattached to the starter transfer gear when the engine runs...but binds onto it when cranking. It could be possible the 1 way sprag bearings have binded onto the flywheel if the part has failed... the sprag attaches to the back of the flywheel with the 3 allen head bolts. The cranking gear goes on the crank first independent of the sprag/flywheel then the sprag inner clutch rides over the cranking gear boss... Also it can be difficult to remove and install the crank timing key when the sprag and flywheel are combined prior to install...So be mindful of the timing woodruff key The sprag might have formed a rust bond on the flywheel but other than the 3 allen bolts all there is might be a mild friction fit that could be coaxed off with a plastic/wood mallet. |

3RD starter clutch!!!!
I'm installing the 3rd starter clutch in an SSR Bison 200. The original one sheared the three bolts off the clutch. The high performance second one sheared SIX bolts off the clutch after only a dozen starts. I see nothing out of the ordinary with the starter motor, the idler gear or the crankshaft. I ordered another high performance clutch but I'm hesitant to install it without an explanation as to why the first two failed.

Sounds like soft bolts, I’d try something hardened.

Thread the bolts back in but only half way. While holding the flywheel, start tapping the bolt heads with a hammer in a circle pattern. The parts are machined pretty well but they'll come loose.
