It is normal to need to rock the bike back and forth to shift (when the engine is not running). This is because the dogs on the gears have to line up and slip into place. If running, there is continuous pull on the crankshaft side, so it is usually impossible to shift except from neutral to 1st, or from neutral to 2nd. The "thunk" you hear is the dogs engaging on drive/driven first gears.
