Idaho Cactus and 8-Point Buck

On a recent ride I was pleasantly surprised to discover the native cactus plants are flowering!

I believe these are Prickly Pear Cactus plants. However, I will gladly defer to the resident experts.

I also recently spotted a nice, 8-point buck.

Every time I read your ride reports I am surprised at how beautiful Idaho is. Thanks for sharing the awesome photos.

I am pretty sure they are Prickly Pear, but I didn't know they grew that far north. I remember eating the fruit in Mexico City many years ago.

Idaho is indeed VERY beautiful! Spud does seem to appreciate it to it's fullest too. :P

That buck is lucky that he's out of season AND you were only shooting with a camera on this occasion.

We have some prickly pear up here (I've seen it around the Lake Roosevelt area/Coolie Dam) but it's rare. Where I live it's mostly sagebrush, tumbleweed, and bunch grass. And sand. Lots of sand.

Beautiful pics! That bottom one with the BRP in it looks like it would make a nice computer wallpaper! 8)

I am going to start riding the Zong more, Brother Bill.

However, I have discovered I can go more places off road, as well as on road, riding my XR650L. The BRP is a two-wheeled tractor. I can crawl up some steep, loose, nasty hills on the BRP which I would never even attempt on the Zong.

In addition, the XR650L will cruise the interstate highways safely, and gets a consistent 55 mpg at the gas pump.

I admit it; I'm addicted to the torque! :roll:

Don't miss a day of summer, Brother Spud! As pretty as those mountains look in the snow, enjoying them on the BRP is the best.

Sometimes a heavier more powerful motorcycle can be safer and easier to ride. Once you get used to it. Plus it's nice to be able to safely use it on the highway. A Triple Purpose bike, if you will.

Indeed, the XR650L is undoubtedly safer to take on extended trips, especially trips to more populated areas.

Also, the XR650L seems ideally suited for most off road riding in the wide open spaces of East Idaho. My lightened BRP only weighs 8 pounds more than a stock, DR-Z400S, but it has much more torque. With 14T/48T sprockets, the XR650L is a two wheeled tractor.

With 13T/48T sprockets, I'm told the XR650L can pull stumps. 8)

That's why I like the KLX so much. For me it's an excellent balance between size/weight/power for on and off road ability.
