EFI question

I have read here and watched some videos about carbs being tuned by the factory to meet emission standards requiring the carb to be tweaked or re-jetted by the end user, are there comparable concerns with EFI cycles or are they ready to go out of the box?

thanks.

They're ready to go, and there's not a whole lot out there in terms of adjustability (of the EFI) anyway. Just make sure you run it in according to the factory recommendations, if they come with them.

For the most part EFI is ready to go.

That said, that doesn't mean the mapping is perfect either. Honda in particular loooooooooooooves to run their bikes very lean at idle and off throttle, but they also don't do the best job on the roll-on fuel enrichment, which tends to make for a very jerky or hesistant feeling throttle under the right conditions/application.

It's not really a concern, and there are ways to ride to compensate for it, but it can also be annoying and in some cases make riding difficult, such as low speed maneuvers in parking lots.

To solve this, many bike owners will often opt for a flash tune to help improve some aspects of the bikes performance. This alters fueling, ignition, and throttle maps as set by the tuner to iron out little quirks like this, and sometimes lean out fueling at WOT and alter ignition curves for more power as well.

Those flash tunes become more important if you modify said bike by installing an exhaust or intake upgrade as the bike will generally run even leaner. Contrary to popular belief, most EFI systems cannot fully compensate for modifications, and thus many flash tuners also offer tunes setup around specific modifications.

My VFR, for example, has a flash tune from Guhl that is designed for a high flow filter and slip on exhaust, on top of the low speed fueling and throttle map fixes. They also disabled the power restrictions in first, second, and 6th gear, and tuned the ignition map to be more aggressive - also meaning I have to run 91 or higher fuel at all times now.
