empty throw of shifter at extremes

My TT250 has a feature of the shifter that I have only ever experienced before on Moto Guzzi 5 speeds from the 1972 to 2012. When you are in first and you try to shift down. The lever will move, but do nothing. Most transmissions the lever stops hard. The same is true if you try to up shift from 5th. You get an empty throw.

I like this feature, as you can check to see if you are in top or bottom without having to cut the throttle and pull in the clutch (and try and push on the lever).

What I have wondered for years is... What do you call this feature? Is there a name for a shifter throw that behaves this way?

Many bikes work that way. Don't think there is a name for it.
