I am no longer supported after tomorrow.

Looks like my computer needs an upgrade. Been faithful XP user for years.

I have a Dell that is pretty old, but I too cheap to replace it. Bought it used last fall.

It is a Dimension 4600 Pentium 4, 2.66ghz and and 2 gig of ram. Yep I am outdated, but it works for me.

Should I try to download a newer OS or just let the girls have this machine and I spend for a newer model?

Big deal on dropped support. I almost don't use updates anyway.

This is a good opportunity to try a flavour of Linux, like Zorin: http://zorin-os.com/

I'm out. Computers are not something I choose to learn.

I'm not sure what I even have, other than it's seven year old and says 'Dell' on it.

I agree with Krasi; I wouldn't worry about it. I suggest you keep using your computer until you have problems. I used Windows 98 for years after Microsoft stopped supporting the software.

XP will still be better than 8 any day. There are a couple options in the modified 7 field that your box can run. Search for tiny7, or I can send you a copy through google docs.

My old dell just died, after upgrading the processor and adding a bit more ram. Decided just to pick up a barebones from newegg in the near future. You could also look at the chromebook if your not doing much more than web surfing, movies and such.

I only web surf, ebay, etc. No games, no movies. Just real basic. I will probably get a newer machine sometime since the one I have for the girls is pretty much dead. Its even older than mine.

Doc, I think my dell is 10 years old. The girls have about a 12 year old one. Both off lease commercial workstation models. I buy them for about $60.

given your uses, i would just keep running the same OS until something dies in the box... or, theres also the linux route, i have a PC running win7/ubuntu dual boot... i love ubuntu as an OS, and i ran it soley on my last laptop because it couldnt run win7... my new laptop seems to do ok with win7, and i dont feel like going thru the work of saving everything to convert to ubuntu...

Apparently, Zorin is based on Ubuntu, and it feels like XP / 7.

i have heard that zorin is an easier crossover than ubuntu, because ubuntu in the 12.x release changed a lot of stuff.. i was used to the 10.x release, and the update to 12 i got lost on a lot of stuff... the 13.x releases are most likely out, as well as the 14.x alpha releases i would guess... havent kept up with it all though...

It seems I may have to revoke my geek card, or can a guy still be a geek and not computer oriented?

I really don't want to be a computer geek. Will just use what I have until it dies.

You are an off-the-chart gun enthusiant, small airplane nut, motorcycle wizard and camera buff, and that's just off the top of my head.

Your geek status is firmly intact.
