ATA-250D Clutch lever on engine

Picked up another Tao Tao ATA-250D from a guy for $200. I already have an identical one so this one was really intended for parts however I started to play with it. Got the carb cleaned out and it fired right up. The clutch cable was ruined so I picked one up from a guy around the corner that sells all the parts for the chinese atvs. I have discovered that there is no real "spring" to the clutch lever on the engine casing. I've never tore into a clutch before. Anybody have any knowledge of these. It will hard shift through the gears but I know that's not good...lol Is there some sort of spring or something needed for this lever inside. This thing runs like a champ so now I'd really like to just make a roller out of it.

The "spring" is really the clutch springs in the clutch pack under the cover. When you pull the lever on the case you are compressing those springs.
