oil cooler plumbing ?

i seen some post about a check valve but i assume that is just if the cooler is lower than the engine. bottom of my cooler is about level with the bottom of the valve cover. i was going to bring oil in the bottom of the cooler and out the top and back to the valves. once engine is shut off it will just drain back down into the engine. am i thinking right or is it bad for it to drain back into the engine.

once the oil drains out of the cooler ..next time you start it
the line/cooler has to fill before any oil gets to the motor..

if you can... oil into the top & out the top or bottom that way
the cooler will stay full....

I do not think it is a good idea to have the oilcooler drain back to the crank case whenever the engine stops. You may end up galling the rocker shaft bearings, and the rocker arm/valve interface. Better to have pressurized oil from start up. You could put a check valve down near the bottom of the oil cooler feed pipe/hose...ARH

I have my coolers with the in/out ports pointed up, so oilwill stay in cooler during initial start. I also let my bikes idle a bit on startup (good time to finish putting riding gear on) to make sure oil circulates and warms a bit under low load before setting off.

Yes, starting the engine before putting on riding gear is a good idea. Getting the oil circulating before putting engine under a load is a good thing.

Even with both oilcooler ports straight up, it is possible to back syphon if the oil comes from the bottom of the engine. Back syphoning is not likely if the oil is coming from the head. This does not mean that this is an insolveable problem. Just put a syphon-breaker in the line...ARH
