Mirror and Fork Lock

Hey Y'all, I got two issues. The mirror keeps moving on its own. Is there a way to tighten it? The fork/key lock mechanism is rubbing the frame, making clicking sound when I turn the handlebar. I'm worry that the lock will fail and lock the steering while I'm riding. Is this paranoia? If not, how difficult is it to permanently remove the fork/key lock?

If you think the lock is that much of a serious safety issue I would probably take it off or disable it completely. I wouldn't play around with something that serious but then again if I remember correctly the wheel only locks in a full turn and when riding you never turn the wheel that far its only if your stoped and trying to move the bike around. Think about it, when riding you lean you don't steer. You can use a disk break lock to prevent theft if your in a bad area if you still want to disable the steering lock.

What adjustment part of the mirror keeps moving the top or the bottom?

No it's not, I think that very thing happened to fatboy250's wife, but I'm not sure. I know that when I read something about it, I went out and checked mine right away. Mine was close to touching. I took a big screwdriver and bent it out so it couldn't lock up on me while riding. My Honda's fork lock is broken and it's gonna stay that way. N2r.

Post a pic of the back of your mirror. Is there an allen key hole to tighten it? If there is then tighten it. If not then loctite, epoxy, jb weld, might work for a while?

I shouldn't have to worry about theft. The "made in China" sticker on the engine is a pretty good deterent against theft.

I don't see any screws/bolt/hole on the mirror.

Less than you might think.

Wouldn't take long for 2 guys to throw your bike in the back of a pick up truck and go. I've been thinking about a secondary locking device (I have no theft insurance because my bike is over 20) but unless I lock the bike to something it won't help much. Even then. A can of freeon and a good hammer defeats most locks. :(

A decent set of mirrors that are tightenable, aren't expensive.

I just wonder how your going to get into that mechenism to disengage the fork lock?Do you feel any resistance when you turn your wheel?

Slightly off topic...

On my old Suzuki GS500 I locked the forks once. It was giving me fits and I had to park it and go after a truck to get to the shop. I returned with the truck and found....no bike. 8O

I called the cops. By the time the cop arrived it was dark, and he took me back to the location I'd seen it last and he lit up the area w/ his spot light and flashlight. My bike had been moved about 10 feet further from the road, and then dumped upside down...down a hill.

Nothing major was damaged...just signals and levers, but I'll think twice about locking my forks again. Yes, it may have been stolen if the forks weren't locked, but considering I never got that bike back out of the shop (long story), I'm no so sure I wouldn't have been better of if it had been stolen.

Sadly, some people will try to destroy something they can't steal. :(

On topic, I don't imagine it would be difficult to disable the lock completely. Bend the tab or just grind it off. Good luck!

Grind it sounds like a good solution. Requires a power tool.

Yep our fork locks are GONE way to dangerous for me.

Ours were half off anyway so we just finished taking out the loose screws.

I just removed the latch on the fork lock. It was pretty easy. No more worry about steering lock up.

No need to resort to such savagery. Just remove a few screws and the latch just falls out.
