oil change on Zong Sierra 200

hello all,
i just did my first oil change and everything went well. however, i have a concern. after i removed the filter, i sprayed WD40 inside the area where the filter goes. then i wiped it off. i noticed a lot of metal-dirt and i am concern that some of it may have gone inside the holes when i sprayed the area  . if this is the case, will this have a negative effect in anyway with the engine?
cr~

You're OK but there is nothing to be gained from using WD40 in that manner so I'd not recommend it in the future.

I'd concur with Mr. FastDoc.. if you wish to clean those surfaces it's always better to spray the rag you're using with the chemical then wiping with the damp cloth/rag.

WD-40 is mostly a solvent, which dissolves oil. Not that a small amount will hurt you but best to keep it out of the internals of the engine.

i have to tell you that my mechanical knowledge is very limited 8O although i should have figured out that a solvent would dissolve the oil which in terms is not good for the engine. i was most concerned with the metal debris going into the engine. lesson learned!
btw, i guess all that debris which is like a fine metal powder is normal in a new engine? :?:

thanks again!

Yup! It's perfectly normal. Some put out more than others during break in but it is definitely not out of the ordinary

I'ts a good idea never to spray anything into an engine. When I change my engine oil, I use a clean rag, or a paper towel, to wipe the debris from the oil filter cavity. The debris you saw was normal, CR. If you read the Oil Change Tutorial in the Zong Sticky, you will see photographs of dirty oil filters taken from Yamaha TW200 engines.

After you ride about 3,500 miles, you should check your valve clearances. If you change the engine oil regularly, and keep the valves adjusted, your Zongshen engine should last a long time.

I never go over 100 miles. Oil is pretty cheap and it only takes one quart to change. Also if you start noticeing a diference in shifting, an oil change is in order.

I assume you meant 1,000 miles? If so that's about what I recomment too.

I change my engine oil approximately every 1,200 miles, when it is convenient. I keep a record of all the maintenance I perform on my motorcycle. When I change the oil, I record the date, and the mileage on the odometer. I then make a mental note to change the engine oil in approximately 1,200 miles.

I might change the oil at 1,000 miles, or I might change it at 1,500 miles, depending on the circumstances. I use Shell, Rotella T6, 5W/40, Synthetic motor oil, so I can wait a little longer between oil changes. However, I changed my engine oil every 800-1,000 miles when the engine was newer, and I was using conventional, non-synthetic oil.
