shineray mod questions

been doing some searching, but very limited info found

I have a 2006 Shineray 200XYi that I'm working on.
I tore into the carb last night to see what the previous owner had done, and why bike was so hard to start.

He had the needle on the upper most clip position, and a 98 jet, air fuel at 2 1/2.
the plug was grey/white.

The jet seems OK, and I set the needle to the 3rd from top position, A/F screw is at 2 turns. It starts better now, but I haven hat the chance to ride the bike to check the needle and a/f settings.

What seems to be the average settings for these bikes? I'm at sea level.

I'd be inclined to drop the clip to the bottom, thereby raising the needle to the limit; always better too rich than too lean. You can always back up from there.

Even with a stock intake and exhaust, 98 sounds a little lean. After you get a chance to ride it a bit, let us know what the plug colour is like.

Air / fuel sounds like it's in the ballpark.

update:

I finally got the chance to ride the bike this weekend after ( the honey do list was done ) re-adjusting the settings....

it started easier, but was bucking as soon as I got on the throttle,
re-did the clip to the second from the top, same thing, bucking.

put everything back to where it was originally, still bucked... :?

this told me it wasnt the carb.
I put dielectric on all electrical connections and put the clip back to the third setting, and the a/f back at 2 turns out.

still bucked, and little to no spark.

cleaned all ground areas, coil, volt reg etc and tried it again

that must have been it !! 8)

the bike starts great, and runs even better. so much that it feels like it has more power .

i'll check the plug after running the bike for a few days, but for now it's set to the same settings as our CRF230 and it's running great, now just have to wait for the rain to stop

fixed!!!!

woho!!!

after the rains ended I finally got a good chance to ride the bike after the adjustments.

it still sputtered at the higher RPM's ...

I know that I adjusted the carb correctly since I have so many other dirt bikes.

I knew this was an electrical problem!

I traced the cutting out, bucking, sputtering problem to an electrical connector. I could actually see the arc when twisting the connector.

This is the left side of the bike, 8 blade connector

after I took the connector apart and connected the wires directly (blade to female) and taped everything up... no more bucking, sputtering !!!

the bike runs great!
The plug looks just like it should !!!

I'm one happy rider

on top of all that, I put in 1.2 gal in after 100 miles of riding
83 mpg , mixed of dirt trails and city

Congratulations! That was a very nice job of troubleshooting.

so now I'm looking for a better rear shock.

the one that's on the bike is 10" bolt center to center, but too soft for my 200lbs.

any suggestions for a replacement?
