Favor Turned Nightmare

Old buddy of mine (83 years young) is a garage sale junky, and just can't help himself when it comes to toys. Many years ago, he picked up a Yamaha Jog scooter for dirt cheap. He started tinkering with it and there it sat, in partial disassembled.

Over a couple beers at our local store, he asked if I'd take a look at it. Of course, I agreed.

"What's the symptoms?" I asked.
"It has a fuel problem, I think. If I squirt starting fluid into the carb, it will run. but not on its own". he responds.

So, I picked it up......and with very little investigation, found this. Now that I have the harness rebuilt, he was right. It only runs on whatever you spray into the carb.

Somehow, I think he neglected mentioning something about letting out all the Magic Smoke that makes wires work.

I don't know this 83 years old fella, but some people is just oblivious and clueless when it comes to machines... Yes they may now the basic what is a carb and so on...

One day i had to take a Suv to the dealer because it had issues, on my way i had to make two stops. In one of them i had to pick someone from the company....

On my second stop, i told this guy. "Watch out for the temperature, if you see that the car starts to over heat shut it down". He allowed the damm radiator to explode and he was not aware of it.........

About the wires, i think is much easier to get a new loom than make a new one.

I got all the spicing done. Turns over without letting out the Magic Smoke now. I never did locate the original short. :-/. Lots of soldier and shrink tube. Cheated with a couple crimp connectors.

Took the carb apart. It was amazingly clean inside....but the jets were clogged, as expected, after all the years. Tested that stupid electric choke. It still worked, amazingly enough. I'll get back on it tomorrow.

Fortunately, the Yamaha Jog is Chinese, so I speak its language. ;-)

Put the carb back on, would still only fire on starting fluid. Dug in deeper and found an intake all cracked up. That explains the utter lack of vacuum to the fuel valve.
New intake manifold, with reed cage and air filter, under 25.00 delivered.

Scooters.... Most everything is buried and dark for these old eyes. Now I know why they call it a Jog. After it quits on the road, that's what you'll be doing.
