Help - new breakin

I just purchased a TBR7D. I changed oil, set idle, checked everything and then started bike for breakin. During the first minutte of the run up, the exhaust started glowing red and the heat shroud melted. Input is most welcome. What's up with this?

The engine is basically running hot and needs cooling. Usually a sign the engine is running lean. Might be worth inspecting and if needed adjusting your valves now then when you have that done see how it runs with the current jets in the carburetor to see if it still runs lean.

Also, make sure the bike is getting airflow, to cool the motor. Don't let it idle for long periods.

Do you mean the plastic muffler guard actually melted? I sometimes think that people may buy these bikes, and not realize what about 1,500 RPM sounds like. I can't imagine even a lean motor getting so hot in one minute. Like stated, you do need to change oil(which you've done), adjust valves, and at least install a more adequate main in the carb, but I don't really know how important the heat cycles that some people do are, but if that's what you're doing, and the motor gets that hot , it's probably doing more harm than good. If you do anymore, at least hold it in about half choke, to fatten it up some, but either way I can't imagine it getting so hot ,in a minute , of idle to melt the muffler plastic from just being jetted lean.

I would definitely adjust the valves. Videos on youtube showing you how. It's easy.

As Bill Hilly mentioned. Make sure the idle is around 1,500 rpms. High idle will heat up the exhaust quick, especially with these lean tuned carbs.

Exhaust glowing red... I would fear exhaust valve isn't fully closing. Can't think of what else would cause this. Let us know what you find.
