The ah reference can be interpreted as volume. As you look at the box that the battery fits in, you can see that capacity is limited to what fits in the space. If a 5ah battery is a snug fit in the box, you can't fit anything larger. That mostly applies to lead acid batteries.


These are very generalized comments, as the fancier LiFePO4 batteries can spin the motor over faster despite a smaller package. They are much more expensive and mustn't be allowed to run low.


My favourite is the BikeMaster Platinum II MS12-4L-A AGM battery. It is a good balance between cost, capacity and longevity. It is available from several sources, and I either bought mine at Rocky Mountain or Bike Bandit (can't recall which). That was in 2013, and it is still going strong. AGM is nice because it doesn't spill and rust the frame and battery box.
