I sent an email to CSC two days ago, and their recommendation is to grind the mounting points too. So I 'll just go ahead and do it - using my Dremel tool and a grinding stone.
They proposed three other solutions: cut a new groove on the shaft, drill the shaft so that a cotter/split pin can be used with a washer, or have them send me a new shaft with mods already done.
CSC mentioned they have found the same problem on a few stands so this seems to be a QC issue.
I just need to make a trip to Home Depot to get me a new c-clip as I busted one when trying to install it.
