The GFCI circuit did what it was supposed to. While troubleshooting, I tried a different (non GFCI) outlet....that's when I got the brief light show and discovered why the pump quit. At that point the water hadn't risen above the edge of the pit yet. Dumb move on my part, I know, but I panicked knowing that the water was rising.
