I think we might be talking about two different vent hoses. The crankcase breather tube is located at the front left side of the engine. It collects excess oil which is vented from the engine. I definitely wouldn't tamper with any of the hoses in that assembly.

However, there is another vent hose which descends behind the swingarm bolt, near the lower shock linkage. I haven't traced it back to its origin, but I think this hose vents the evaporative canister. I believe this is the hose Sprite was inquiring about, and it is the hose I have been discussing.
