I've always put my bike in 1st gear, and my wrench on the nut or bolt towards the center of the wheel. Never in the direction facing outward.
It has always been enough for me to loosen bolts that way.
On Chinese bikes, which need frequent maintenance, definitely blue locktite is a good option, though sometimes it's not even necessary.
I would take a spare nut from a variety pack I own, and just add the second nut to keep the main one in place.
