Remember that Chumbawamba song? Coming to riding as an adult - or returning to it - can be a lot like that song. I don't mean the excessive drinking parts, I mean the parts about dumping the bike and needing to pick it right back up and get it going again. You're gonna dump it. So, just get ready for that. Assuming you've already done all the basics for licensing, and have thought about skills drills to improve your riding skills (hello, parking lots), I would offer - just be ready for when it goes down and things bend, or break, or aren't right.

I sold my SYM Wolf 150 to a friend of mine as their first motorcycle, after being a scooter rider (until that got stolen.) I wouldn't call it a complete POS, because it's not. But it clearly already had some battle scars when I got it. But it was mechanically sound when I handed it over. It's got some new dings and dents and long scratches, but still runs great - but it's still their first POS motorcycle and, as a 150cc bike, is an awesome one.
