You'd be wrong on the top bar brakes. Much, much better than the 'turkey legs' of the 60s. CX drops on a roadie, no problem. I draw the line at brifters.

Down tube or bar end friction shifters for this kid. They are simple and fool proof. There's also something to be said about being able to shift both derailleurs on the down tube with one hand when need be.
