I think this would be the better way to go. I only suggested trying to rear out first because of his desired two sprockets.
Plus, if you want to go taller, say similar to going with a 46 rear on the 15 tooth front, if you do the 17 tooth front first, to get about the same gearing as a 15/46, you could run a 17/50.

I agree the front is easier to swap but I was seeing where I might have clearance issues with a 17 in the front.
Good discussion though because I want to get this right.
