Not knowing your mileage, I would say that it is possibly time for a clutch. It sounds like clutch plates are sticking. That could be due to worn plates or or weak/broken clutch springs. You will have to pop the clutch cover off to know for sure.
Another possibility is stretched clutch cable that doesn't have enough adjustment left, but this one is a bit of a stretch. Pardon the pun.
