I guess I never followed up on this. I was hoping could easily open the muffler can after I removed the side boxes, but it's riveted together. I suppose I could grind them off and screw it back together, but that's more work and risk than I want to do right now.
I've tried a few different earplugs. The foam ones block out almost all the sound but they make it hard to hear anyone I'm talking to. I got a set of silicon hearos that work ok. I might take it to a muffler shop over the winter.
