The mount on the frame where the shock mounts, takes a smaller diameter bolt. I don't remember if the shock itself takes a smaller bolt or not. I haven't had any problems with it and have been using...

I did have to add washers to get the correct spacing. The top bolt is smaller diameter than what will fit the shock.

I did not mod the bike. I had to use spring compressors to compress it enough to mount it. I bought a R6 shock off ebay that said it was for a 99-02. I got the idea after seeing this thread ...

I put a yamaha R6 shock on my bike. It is longer than the stocker and had to compress it to make it fit. Rides real nice on the road and is pretty good for light off road duty.

It is not a direct fit, about 1/4 longer than the stocker IIRC.
