I don't think he's using the starter to propel forward; rather, bike stalls and while still in gear it moves backwards, rotating the whole engine back and thus engaging (and straining) the overriding...

Ok, that's not the starter but the charging coil, also known as stator. One of the few partes of the motorcycle easy to home (or shop) fix. Good luck with that. Let us know if you need some help.

Mine was #141 (or perhaps 142) and it was a bit too much. With a #135 it worked much better, at less while it was a 250. When I switched to the 283cc kit, I swapped the original main jet again.

Can relate. My carb was the same; starving in the middle range, an too big a main jet at WOT. But after fixing that it ran great.
