On my Hawk I have found that the clutch cable requires far less free play to function properly than spec., like almost zero. Try it with just a hint of free play...

The stock clutch on my Hawk seems plenty adequate and stronger than the motor, if "clutch it up in 3rd gear" means to wheelie the bike using the awesome power of the CG motor you may be optimistic.

Having had both types of calipers, I'm not sure I would rush to replace the stock caliper on your bike. These bikes are light and stop pretty well IMO. Front brake can actually work a bit too well...
