If it is shorted, it will burn up wire(s) and possibly damage the reg/rec and possibly even the stator. I'd get a cheap battery just so it doesn't fry...

If it's a CDI system, it might be simpler. Maybe the 150cc engine comes with a carb and peripherals like CDI/coil.
