That's correct, in most motorcycles the radiator is the highest point in the cooling system, so is quite uncommon to have air bubbles.
But since it seems he never messed with the cooling system...

Like they said, it's most likely low coolant...

Like they said, it's most likely low coolant level or just air trapped.
The engine should have a bolt that's there just to bleed the system.
