I have found that once I get to top speed WOT if I back off the throttle just a bit the engine changes from "working hard" to "humming", without losing much speed.

Overheating

Check to see that both fans are working. I have had fans on other bikes quit because rocks or dirt clods were in the way.
Let us know when you find the problem and what the cure was.
