My new to me TTR225
 

I've had a real craving to get myself a dirt bike
And kinda lost interest in my trike
We'll not so much lost interest in the trike. But enjoy riding 2 wheels a lot more

So I listed my beloved big red
Priced it high to see what would happen.
Well it sold shortly after

I had a bike I was interested in lined up already as I'd offered to trade but the seller was not interested in trades. So I told him I'd get ahold of him if my trike sold

I lined up a viewing today and loaded it up shortly after
It's a 2001 TTR 225

I wanted something my wife could grow into aswell it's still a little tall for her. But she's still learning bikes right now anyways and has fun on my 100 dollar xr80

That's the perfect trail bike, and you got the big wheel version. Son of Weldangrind wants one in the worst way. Does it have aluminum or steel rims?

Steel rims. Might sound like a noob question is there a benifit for one vs the other ?

Thanks spud. I've only rode it in the culdesac and up and down the sellers road so far. But so far I love it. It's comfortable to ride. And it's basacly what I wanted in a bike

MIGHT look into adding lights and seeing if I can get it road worthy down the road
Seller included a California title with it (originally came from the states) not sure if it'll help but I have it

Nice wee bike.... pretty bullet proof...
knowing Yamaha it maybe restricted... Check that the throttle
opens all the way up & that there's not a restricter in the end
of the header pipe....
I toss a 05 TTR250 around the trails from time to time...

Aluminum rims are lighter and less prone to warpage. There was a steel rim on the front of the Lifan that I bought, and it was bent. I laced an aluminum DID rim from an '83 Honda XR200 onto it, and then Son of Weldangrind hit a nasty bump and broke six spokes. That wheel was ridiculously out of whack after that, and we all thought the rim was taco'd. I removed all of the spokes to repair it this year, and was pleasantly surprised to find the rim unharmed! With some new spokes, I was good to go.

A steel rim would have been bent and subsequently tossed in the scrap pile. If your rims are still round, ride them as they are. If they ever bend, you'll find a good value in Warp 9 rims.

If it was imported as a Restricted Use Motorcycle (RUM), you won't likely be able to add lights and make it street legal. We used to be able to dual sport dirt bikes in BC, but the laws have changed.

I'm going to be doing an oil change before I really take it out for a ride.
The previous owner has it overfilled. Hive to lean the bike away from the sight glass quite a ways before seeing the top of the oil level.

My question is. I bought 20w50 motorcycle oil for this
Owners manual says 10w30 or 20w40

Am I ok with the oil I got ?

20W50 is just fine, and in fact it's better in this hotter weather.

You're welcome. I run 15W40 Rotella year-round, but I probably should run 20W50 when it's over 30C.

Yamalube is Motul 5100 repackaged...
Cheaper as the Motul brand

Did the oil change today. And I don't know if it's in my head. But I think it runs better
Even if it doesn't I'm still going with it does lol

The previous owner had way way to much oul in this thing. Drained over 2L I'd say
Oil change only requires 1L

I also did some checks I wanted to do before buying it. But didn't have any tools
Multi metered the battery with bike off and on wanted to be sure it was charging properly

Wanted to check air filter but again no tools
Looks like some drilled the air box out already. I've read it's a very common mod on this bike

Took filter out. Looked good. Cleaned it and re oiled it anyways

I also ordered a couple key blanks
I work at a door shop so I'll just cut them myself
But bike only came with one
