Cushman II

I got back to Oregon and immediately headed over to my amigo Greg's house to check out his new Cushman II. It has a 404cc, 14 hp, OHV Subaru engine, allegedly, it will go 70 mph, I'm not sure I believe that though. The fit and finish is good, the whole scooter is powder coated, overall, I like it a lot.

With only 14hp @ 404cc, I bet it makes a ton of torque. I'm guessing it's an under square engine (a very long stroke). It might just thump along at 70mph with the right gear ratio.
Does it use a jackshaft? Does it have a CVT? It looks like a vertical utility engine (like a Briggs), which typically has the drive shaft on the left, yet this bike has right side drive. I agree that it's way cooler than the snail bike. |

My Dad had a cushman. Weld the engine would be the same type you would find on a garden tiller.

At the bike show I competed in last summer my CB175's biggest competition was a restored 1950's Cushman. It was an amazing restoration, I'll try to find a pic to share.

I've seen some Cushman restorations with a 'Vanguard Conversion'. A Briggs 16-20 horse V-twin in place of the old cast iron thumper. 70+ is a given with the bigger engines. Stopping a Cushman with stock brakes at those speeds is probably very interesting. |

Weld, I guess I'd call it a jackshaft, there is a belt is on the left side and it drives the right side chain to the rear wheel. There are single disk brakes on both front and rear wheels also dual shocks front and rear.

We rode up to McKenzie pass today, here are a couple of photos of Greg's Cushman II with the cowling off, he is till trying to sort out the jetting on the Subaru engine.

That's really cool. I like the jackshaft arrangement and the hard brake line that connects to the rear caliper.

I don't know about the subaru engine, but for the hondas and the clone engines you can buy performance carbs and filters. Look up kart racing engines.
