Bolt on no mods oil cooler? Any intrest?
 

Working with a manufacturer in China on a bolt on oil cooler. Just wondered how much interest their would be? It will mount vertical on the left side of the bike along the frame rail. Dimensions of the heat exchanger are as follows:

8.75"tall
2.5" wide
1.5" thick

It will be of a stacked plate design so you can pressure was it without bending fins. Mounting it off to the side of the tire will allow full air flow while keeping a lot of the grime off of it. It will come wit replacement valve cover, hoses, custom mounting brackets and of course the heat exchanger.

Price will be dependent on what kind of volume i can order but tentatively looking at around $75 + shipping. A little more than the Bangood ones you can order but like the tach cluster i designed, it will be bolt on, no muss no fuss.

FYI, Also looking at inexpensive handguards and larger footpegs. Please chime in and let me know your thoughts.......

No, No, and No. You don,t need oil cooler on OHV engines used on motorcycles like the Hawk. just wasting your money.

Put your time and money in stuff like handguards, larger footpegs and maybe new rear brake design and improved suspension.

Drop the oil cooler idea.

One more, a new seat design. We didn't likes the seat on our Hawks that much.

I respectfully disagree. I have two of the finned oil coolers for my hawks. besides increasing the oil capacity a ton, they cool the valve area which if you live where it gets hot, is a seriously good thing.if you're in alaska or run roads at good airflow speeds all the time, then maybe a cooler won't offer you a ton of good, but if you ride hard gnarly trails at low speeds, then the coolers are a godsend. I think wolftrax was advised by a hawk tech to put one on for his expedition bike so he could run sustained high speeds on the good roads in the hot southwest.
what i like about mjstefs version is the side mount (more airflow) and the much stronger construction. The skinny metal fins on mine may not be all that durable and if a rock flies up and crunches them, it will be a race to the JB weld before i lose too much oil.!

otoh, if you're an easy rider kind of guy and don't stress the motor much, no need for the cooler, but if you run hard where it gets toasty, just the peace of mind is more than worth it which is why i got mine:) Gets hot out here, and my bro and I thrash the gnarlies:)
seriously looking to put one of his strong ones on my incoming TT250 so I can seriously wring it out on the highways round here. ever notice that serious commercial trucks and boat engines carry a chitload of oil? there's a reason.

Most of my riding is under 15MPH and the mountains and the last time i changed oil after 50 miles it looked like crap. I also cannot shift after about 1/2 hour of mountain riding unless i let the bike sit and cool off. The extra oil and the cooling provided should help enormously.

SeerAtlas, mjstef We can agree that we disagree, that's fine put an oil cooler on it. I stand by it's a waste of money.

And mjstef I live in Montana and ride in the mountains and have never changed my oil after a 50 miles and never had any shifting problems no mater how hot it got. What type of oil are you using?

Has anyone actually checked the oil temperature to know if a cooler is needed or is this another one of those parts that will be added because it's used on race bikes so it must be good? Overheated oil is bad, so is underheated oil. I wouldn't add a cooler unless needed and would want it to be thermostatically controlled. If the cooler's mounting/plumbing means it can drain it would also get a check valve.

Potential downsides to a cooler, especially one that's not well thought out: Oil too cold. Dry starts. Another part who's failure can wreck the motor and/or leave you stranded. Added weight. Added cost. Only partial oil changes unless the cooler is drained. Oil starving the engine. Probably more not coming to mind.

For those wanting it for low speed high load operation, have you considered that at 10-15mph the airflow through a plate cooler is likely to do near nothing?

Jap bikes have had similar designed engines for decades making more power and heat and have long records of durability without coolers.

Now that I've said my peace, enjoy the added bling if you choose to.

Wy not just mount a 12 volt radiator fan near the top end of the engine and mount
a toggle switch for it on the handlebars.Low speed cooling problem solved.

I'm not disputing the potential benefits of a cooler when I ask, are you running a filter on the vent hose? If you have an unfiltered vent hose that routes behind the motor and points at the ground, it's inhaling dust. A cheap filter (even a fuel filter) will keep dust out.
