My wife's 100 dollar XR80

I'll copy and paste a bunch of info over from another thread I started a while ago on a forum I don't use anymore

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...668614916A.jpg

I don't know much about it. But it's a 81 xl80s

Looks like it has a Chinese carb on it was told it runs but needs tuning.
Has "custom" exhaust aswell header pipe is still there and all intact but looks like it has a lawn mower muffler welded to the end.

Just a tinker project/put around pit bike

Not going to be anything spectacular.
This will get everything stripped off lights ect missing most of the headlight assembly anyways.

Here's a few more pics
Unloaded it and moved it to back yard for now

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...A32D3ECE6C.jpg

The "custom" exhaust I was talking about.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...9F378A1A9A.jpg

Here's the carb. I haven't looked into it yet
Looks Chinese. Looks permatexed on to

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...31BCD4B04D.jpg

And just another angle

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...7170B4F91E.jpg

I don't think I'll be saving headlight or anything on this. Just strip it down and make it a rider

Need to get carb all sorted out. Inside of tank is pretty rusted. And need to find a few bolts for left side cover. That's basically it for now. Possibly tubes for the tires but I'll start with getting it running

IT RUNS

Nothing to big for update but moved it in the yard today and thought I'd see if it ran. Gas tank still crusty rusty and not plumbed to carb yet anyways. But sprayed gas in the carb and fired first kick.

Surprisingly not to loud with the custom exhaust.
Going to look for some apple cider vinegar for the tank. And hopefully the carb dissent need to much tuning and hopefully it runs good with it.
If not a Chinese xr carb is like 20 bucks on eBay and I'll start from scratch with something I kinda know.

I let it soak with vinegar for about 3 days tank came out incredibly clean

It lives....kinda
Needs some work yet but was able to ride it
Only runs with choke on and can't rev it or it dies. Idles high so was rideable

Sorry if these vids aren't forum friendly edit and remove vids if not. Or let me know and I will

Soo I decided to throw some money at this project

It has and came with stupid BMX grips on it so I went ahead and ordered theses up
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/171177796417
Black ones

I still need to get it running properly. Haven't touched the bike since the weekend
I'm hoping to just "tune" the carbs and get it to run
Still need to strip off the useless junk
And want to eventually put a different muffler on. Even just a Chinese atv/motorcycle muffler but we'll see

Not going to be pouring money into this or be coming anywhere near a restoration
Just going to be a dirt bike

I ended up ordering a chinesse carb off eBay for it. Was 20 bucks
I was to impatient to look for or order a jet so I drilled one out. Runs awesome

Small update
Went with the carb posted and drilled out the jet. Runs awesome now lol
Tore out old air box. Running a uni filter. Cleaned up all wiring
I'll get pics up in a bit.

For what I got into this beast it's going to be fun
Not as fast as I remember. Mind you last time I rode one was about 12 years and 100 or so pounds ago lol

Dave

I apologize if the information seems scattered but seemed lie quickest easiest way to get this topic started
I ruined the first uni filter I had on it. (Wrong size for carb)
I have one ordered should be here Thursday or Friday I'll put up to date pics up then

To sum everything up
It has a completely different carb on it then when I bought it
It has all the useless junk stripped off of it
It's rewired with 1 wire instead of 4. Kill switch still functions wanted it to for wife's sake
Gas tank is all cleaned out
It has a broken stud on header. Looks like someone got creative and tryed to weld it back on at some point with no luck
Has new grips on it
Never had the side covers for it. I tore the original air box out completely and run a uni filter

If I think of anything else I'll post it.
Updated pictures coming soon :)

Thanks for showing us your XL project. There's nothing wrong with the layout of your thread.

If you choose to, you can throw the lights and signals back on a later date, and obtain regi from ICBC. I've done it several times, and it adds considerable value to the bike. It doesn't have to be a restoration to claim the regi; only functional.

I bought a small supermoto front fender for my Lifan that would be perfect on that XL80, and it was only about $6.00. http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=2979100123

I built a custom muffler for my old XL250S that was pretty simple; perhaps you could make something similar work. Read about it here: http://www.chinariders.net/showthread.php?t=10096

If you really get silly in the future, you could bolt in a 200cc China motor. :D

I filled the tank to the top with vinagar and let it sit for about 72 hours this tank was bad.
Then I pressure washed the inside to get all the gunk out
Probably could of got away with just using just a hose

Once it's done you must fill it or coat the inside with oil or something or it will just flash rust

X2. Please tell us where you bought the apple cider vinegar, how much you used and how long it took. Thanks!

Weldangrind 07-30-2014 10:39 AM

Sorry, posted at the same time.

That's a very nice muffler. I'll keep it in mind.

Think a 200cc motor would bolt in ?

Thanks. It was really easy to make, although welding onto the original rusty steel was tricky.

Yes, I think a 200 would bolt in. :D You could make a little hot rod out of it, and terrorize the neighbourhood.

FYI, it's a $7.00 fee at ICBC, plus a notarized signature (about $30) and a registered letter (about $8). Having a plate on a little bike like that would be grin-inducing.

I'm gonna try that on an XT350 tank I have. I was thinking of rinsing it with Varsol to prevent flash rusting; do you think that'll work?

I'm not sure if that would work.
But I've heard "fogging" the tank with WD-40 works
Or just fill it up

Dave

I never got step by step photos of the process
But here's inside the tank after

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...4CB329C0B5.jpg

I run an inline filter on this bike
Should of seen the one I had on it before cleaning it out
Dident help much rust and crud still plugged the carb

looks like a fun project. and a rat bike keeps the punk rocker within happy :-) but i d get rid of that front fender, though it probably does a good job given its huge size.
