ktm 2001 525sx

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001-...orcev4exp=true I have looked and can not find much about these bikes . 1500.00 seems cheap though . anyone know there reliablity.

I think WA is a KTM person. Seems like alot of bike for $1500. Have you check the book value on it? No bids with one day out makes me think that others don't seem to be interested.

It is 12 years old now.

FastDoc 01-25-2013 12:00 PM

I agree it looks like a great value and it may be. :D

However, something to consider is for a KTM it's pretty old. This older generation KTM was not the established sorted reliable KTM machine we see today. Indeed they tend to break, and they break expensive.

I'd consider a bike like that at that price if I knew something about its history and I had a good look and test ride.

In general I shy away from older KTM's with an unknown history.

Also the 'SX' KTM's have a harsh suspension and geometry and gearing that does not lend itself very well to a dualsport or trail bike.

With that said the same thing can be said about my YZF, and it would be true. It has wonderful suspension, but it is capable of beating the living %$#@ out of a rider on a long trail ride.

In searching the internet , i can't find any 2001 525sx ktm's at all . he said this one is a 6 speed and street legal . makes no sense to me .

FastDoc 01-25-2013 04:14 PM

There are so many KTM models to be honest I can't keep track.

Usually the 'SX's are 5-speed kickstart moto/supercrossers.

Nowadays in some states many bikes can be plated but I don't think that would be a factory dualsport.

But, like I say I'm not up on my KTM prefixes.

recracer 01-25-2013 04:40 PM

likely not worth the risk ., less info than a cb

FastDoc 01-25-2013 04:46 PM

Whereas that KTM is probably very fast it looks clapped out and unloved. I'd bet it would cost a lot to fix up. Like I say, I avoid older 'shady' KTMs.

Despite all that has been said here, I'd still likely jump on it if I could get it for around $1000.00. It's tempting to send the seller a message.

recracer 01-26-2013 12:51 PM

i watched it end . now waiting to see if he relist . i had aready sent a message to ask some details , street legal , six speed . he offered to let me take a ride . the current weather is not good for a ride at this time ,a LITTLE SNOW

SpudRider 01-27-2013 04:38 AM

That bike is 12 years old. I agree with FastDoc; I think I would pass on it. ;)

Spud :)

more than likely it is a 520exc, the sx has a 4 speed tranny i think. $1500 is a fair price for it, they were the early version of the RFS motor that my 450exc uses, basically bullet proof, i think the only mod is to replace some bolts in the head with hardened ones and you basically have an XR reliability motor that will try and rip your arms off.

That does not sound bad at all . The listing ran out and has not been relisted at this point.
