Here it is. Pretty good shape. I will update tomorrow when we start making some repairs.

MICRider 12-13-2013 08:31 PM

Cool score Kato! Looks like the girls approve as well :D.

SpudRider 12-13-2013 09:19 PM

Good for you, Allen! That was a good purchase.

katoranger 12-13-2013 10:18 PM

The lights work. The horn honks. Good tires on aluminum wheels. Nothing is bent. Seller said forward would not work. I got it to go by adjusting the cable. I think the CVT is stuck in a high ratio. Might need a new belt. We will open that tomorrow.

katoranger 12-14-2013 02:07 PM

Today's assessment. I think the CVT driven clutch is stuck. Seatbelts buckles are broken. The chain is not aligned and I am trying to figure out how to align that. I think I need to check the motor mounts. Positive battery cable needs replaced.

SpudRider 12-14-2013 02:22 PM

I'm sure you will soon have things sorted out, Allen.

Weldangrind 12-14-2013 03:03 PM

I like that double row drive chain. How is the planetary reverse mechanism lubricated?

katoranger 12-14-2013 06:45 PM

I plan to do some maintenance on it. On the scooters the rear final drive has an oil supply. I think that the reverse is similar.

The drive chain I think is #50 chain.

katoranger 12-14-2013 06:49 PM

I did some research and it looks like I want some 9 gram rollers and a yellow torque spring for the clutch. That should make it take off and climb hills. I don't really care about top speed we won't be able to go that fast in the yard.

About $30 for those parts including a new drive belt.

katoranger 12-14-2013 09:07 PM

The reverse box is like this one. I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

SpudRider 12-15-2013 05:38 AM

That vehicle just needed a little TLC. ;) It found a good home.

MICRider 12-15-2013 10:22 AM

I like the way the frame is put together on the buggy, it looks to be a very good design. And with Kato's CVT experience, I don't doubt it'll be tooling around soon! :D

Weldangrind 12-15-2013 12:02 PM

I haven't looked much, but I've never seen reverse incorporated into a GY6. I've only seen the planetary-style that bolts onto the output shaft. Does it separate from the output shaft?

Did the driven clutch turn out to be stuck?

katoranger 12-15-2013 02:36 PM

We haven't opened it up yet. Going to do that this afternoon. I have not seen this style either.

Back in from the shop. Girls took the drive apart. I found that the large nut that holds the exhaust mount to the CVT cover backed off and rattled around inside. The Variator is all broken up. The clutch looks okay, but the belt was sitting down too far in the pulley. I took it apart anyway since I plan to order the yellow torque spring for more low end and climbing power. The rollers actually looked pretty good yet, but I plan to buy some 8 gram ones again for more low end power.

Belt still measures in spec, but I will just get a new one since its apart.

We fixed the battery cable connection and took the seatbelts off to see if we can fix the buckles.

katoranger 12-15-2013 06:05 PM

I ordered up a new variator with 10gram sliders, yellow 1500lb torque spring, and a new bando belt.

Noticed the clip on the master link is missing. I think its #50 chain. Might be 530. It is double row. I am going to try and get the sprockets aligned better too. I think a bushing is missing or not installed correctly on the chain adjustment. Engine is only held by one bolt at the top by the starter and then the chain adjustment bolt at the rear.

SpudRider 12-15-2013 06:10 PM

You are a lucky man to have such beautiful little helpers.

katoranger 12-15-2013 08:31 PM

They are learning. Emilie used the impact and took the pulleys off. Lily used it on the rear wheel. We took apart the seatbelt buckles and were able to repair those. Now we just have to wait on some parts. Suppose we can change engine oil and final drive oil. I have not found where to put oil or grease in the reverse box yet.

Some more pics.

You can see where the belt was stuck on the clutch pulley. Stopped it should have been all the way to the outside.

Also a pic of the variator and broken bits. I only found one of the plastic ramp plate sliders. Rollers didn't look too bad. I don't think this has many hours on it.

I got a pic of the nut and some broken bits that were hidden behind the clutch. We took the clutch apart in preparation for the yellow torque spring. Torque spring will allow faster downshift and betting pulling power. Need that for sled pulling.

New variator is a "performance" unit with 10 gram sliders. I think the stock rollers are 14 gram. This will allow the engine to rev higher before engaging.

This setup will give us some great acceleration with sacrificed top speed. Top speed is not that important for our yard. I had the opposite for the Honda Elite.

I never thought about it before, but you can't see grease under red fingernails. ;)

She is not afraid of grease either.

Thanks for posting the link to the great photos! It appears Buford has delegated some of his lesser supervisory duties to Mister Fluffy. ;)

I've read that sliders are the way to go. Combined with the yellow torque spring, it should be a fun machine.

It would be even more fun with a 180cc BBK. :D

katoranger 12-16-2013 10:43 AM

Mr Fluff has the job of sniffing shop rags and keeping seats warm.

Scrappy dog has a 200cc GY6 replacement buggy engine. The current engine is the not as common 2 bolt valve cover meaning that the go fast parts are not as easy to find. I think with the CVT mods we will have more than enough power. The engine runs fine with no smoke. Started in the cold.

Everyone has a job in your household. ;) Buford is wise to delegate some of his supervisory burdens.

katoranger 12-16-2013 07:09 PM

I grabbed the stock rollers and weighed them. 14 grams each. I think the 10 gram sliders will make it wake up.

Parts are looking like a Thursday arrival. Don't think we will get a chance to ride it before we leave for Minnesota.

Getting ready for school. Little Elise has her favorite boots on.

Weldangrind 12-17-2013 10:30 AM

You're a blessed man, Allen.

katoranger 12-17-2013 11:00 AM

I was able to buy the master link at the farm store yesterday. Need to figure out the chain adjustment. I think something it not right.

SpudRider 12-17-2013 03:15 PM

X2. Your daughters have beautiful smiles.

katoranger 12-17-2013 06:29 PM

I just purchased one helmet. Bidding on two more. The girls love pictures.

SpudRider 12-17-2013 07:19 PM

I think they enjoy both taking photos, and posing for them. In both instances, I love viewing their photographs. :) They are beautiful young ladies, and they document your projects very well. In addition, they capture nice photographs of Buford performing his essential supervisory duties. ;)

katoranger 12-17-2013 09:54 PM

Buford becomes the subject of many of their photos.

SpudRider 12-17-2013 10:10 PM

Buford is a lucky cat to receive such love and attention. :D

FastDoc 12-17-2013 10:11 PM

It's a well known fact that cats are excellent supervisors, study partners, and photo models.

SpudRider 12-17-2013 10:13 PM

You have spoken as a true ailurophile, Brother Bill. :)

Did it turn out to be #50?

Yes. I bought a #50 double row master link and it matches. Since they have the links I am sure they have the chain too.
