Hawk 250 Air Filter

Planning ahead and don't really see anyone having posted a source for an air filter. Correct me if I'm wrong please...

I pulled mine and took measurements for reference.

It appears that this Briggs and Stratton filter will kind of fit. It isn't a direct replacement, but it'll fill the hole. Does anyone know of any others that would work?

Your picture looks like a Fram air filter.

I used a lawn mower air filter. Bought it at a local automotive store.

Based on your photo and theirs on their site, perhaps an air filter for a TT250 will work and can be obtained from CSC?

You're right. They look remarkably alike. Probably the same thing. CSC claims they don't yet have the filters, but they are on the way.

At $6.85 that's a reasonable price. Assuming they don't charge too much for shipping.

Thanks for the pointer. This helped me narrow things down. It looks like the Hawk uses the same filter as the Honda XR125 / NXR 125 / NXR 150. But I can't find a filter anywhere for them.

We might all be forced to either use the lawnmower air filters, or swap out to one of these things.

Oh, and since I just noticed you can't really read my dimensions well, here is the full size version of my little sketch.

Weldangrind 05-29-2016 09:25 PM

I've installed several of these, and they're quite good quality: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BLACK-42mm-B...FUi8Cu&vxp=mtr

How much louder does it generally make the Hawk? And do you need to rejet and/or do anything with the exhaust?

Weldangrind 05-30-2016 11:20 AM

I can't hear it over the Honda CRF250X muffler I welded on. Yes, you need fatter jets any time you increase air flow. You can certainly use a pod filter without changing the exhaust, but you should still expect that jet changes will be needed.

If that B&S filter will fit..
  • Replaces Briggs & Stratton Service Part #491588S
  • For 3.5 through 6.75 Horsepower Quantum Engines and 625 through 1575 Series Engines
According to the K&N cross reference chart here;
http://www.knfilters.com/industrial.htm

This one should fit, and is a lifetime type filter that does not require oiling.
http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?prod=33-2238

Has anyone tried the B&S replacement? can you describe the fitment?

I'd buy one of the K&N and give it a shot if someone can vouch for the fitment.

SeerAtlas 07-27-2016 02:04 PM

while you're looking at filters, Motocheez did an airbox mod in one of his videos, my bro tried it before this morning's ride. for whatever reason, his immediate reaction after passing me at about 55 true going UPHILL, was "WOW".stock carb, stock exhaust. claimed he got 6 or 7 mph on top end with torque to match. he's running a 16/45 combo. I can tell you I was surprised when he went by (was on my Triumph T-Bird) and he sounded like a 350/400:)

ckrug4 07-28-2016 11:46 AM

I took a good quality pleated air filter and cut it to fit my air box. Doubled it up with a little hardware cloth under it for strength. So far so good. Drilled a few good sized holes in top of box. The Briggs n Stratton did look to fit the box but it was $7. The ac air filter was $4 and I have enough material to make several filters.

jimwildman 07-28-2016 09:00 PM

I ordered the k&n so when it comes in ill report back on the fit, and such, take a few pictures.

If it dont fit the bike it will fit my lawn boy so no harm no foul.

pcspecialist 07-28-2016 09:04 PM

I ordered the one from CSC, when it arrives I'll let you know if it is the same size as the Hawk filter though I'm pretty sure it is. According to the tracking info, I'll have it this Saturday.

"It appears that this Briggs and Stratton filter will kind of fit."
Genuine Buddy scooter riders have been using the Briggs filters, too.

pcspecialist 07-30-2016 10:51 PM

I got it today and am confirming that the TT250 filter is the same as the Hawk. Exact match.

jimwildman 08-09-2016 05:23 PM

i put on the k and n filter, its a bit smaller then the original, but the seal still makes plenty of contact, its clamped down nice by the retainer.

having a bit smaller filter surface bothered me until i fired the bike up.. i had to check that the tube was on the carb as it sounds like there is no filter at all.

i added a bead of lithium greese to the rubber seal to make sure it seals a bit better. there was plenty of dust inside the airbox telling me the original dont seal for shit.

bike sounds alot more throaty as i would expect, seems to flow more than enough air for the bike. i also rejetted to 110 main and the bike has woken up, revs right out to the limiter and feels soo much better.

best part, i can wash it out and reuse it for a long time.

didnt take any pictures but there isnt mufh to see, no modification, just pull out the old, clean up the air box if its dirty, lube up the seal on the new and bolt it in.

main jet has made the biggest difference in performance yet.

I will take some pics of the chain tensioner I made, best mod Ive done on the hawk, my chain never falls off, or rubs the tire, it stays exactly where it belongs.

Weldangrind 08-10-2016 10:57 AM

Terrific news that the K&N fits the Hawk (and likely the TT250). Good decision to grease the perimeter of the seal to keep dust out.

Was the K&N pre-lubed from the factory?

pcspecialist 08-10-2016 01:41 PM

As I stated earlier, I ordered the TT250 filter and it is the exact same as the one my Hawk came with. If the K&N fits the Hawk, it absolutely will fit the TT250.

jimwildman 08-10-2016 05:16 PM

the k&n is an oilless filter, just wash it out and reuse it. the one i got for my car is the same way no oiling. ive had that for 3 years now and its still like new.

greasing the seal should help with the dust getting past and into the box. it was fine dust , none would be better.

the paper filter was a concern for me as it will get wet, just a matter of time, and having the filter suck into the box and such would be a bitch.

I just ordered one from Ebay. 26.99 free shipping and no tax. In case you live in free places like NH there is this little extortion fee we pay in ct to the tune of 6.35. Oh yeah maybe I explain to you this concept of income tax too in another thread.

pcspecialist 08-10-2016 07:30 PM

there are no free places in the Land of the Fee, Home of the Slave.

I accept that; it's the nicest way anybody has ever called me a dumbass. I'll try harder to have a good command of the obvious.

That's a good price. The last Uni I bought several years ago was around $20.00 OTC, IIRC.

kd2dxf 02-26-2017 09:46 AM

I plan on getting an Angled pod filter to replace the air box. how many mm's is the outside of the mikuni vm 26 carb, so i know what size pod filter to get

Azhule 02-26-2017 11:05 AM

43mm UNI Pod filters work on our VM26

Something similar to these below

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006RJY67G

Or anything with a 43mm inner diameter is what you will need ;)

nattex 02-27-2017 03:48 PM

Uni here also. Very pleased with it so far. Uni's are known to be a quality air filter.

letsride 02-27-2017 04:51 PM

Why get rid of the air box? Why can't I just put that Uni pod filter IN the original modded air box? :hmm: Just thinking out loud. But I like the idea of my air filter being protected.

I've been thinking how I'm going to do that myself when it come time for a new filter. I should be able to accomplish that with some PVC pipe.

Just going from memory, but some people got junk air boxes from the factory so they wanted to replace/remove it, others probably just like the look.

hertz9753 02-27-2017 06:28 PM

I remember a guy that put a pod in his air box. It involved that pipe and some fittings on each end.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/270761406708...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I went the simple route with a K & N drop in filter and rubber weather stripping to seal it because the lip is not as thick as the stock filter.

Rail32 02-27-2017 08:12 PM

When my pipe comes in and I install it on the hawk250 there is possiblity of interfrence with air box . Gonna decide at that point on ways gonna be my move.
Either modding air box or going with Uni filter directly on carb . Most likley if I go direct filter to carb I will make spash guards to protect filter from direct water spray . This is just my thinking and may change mind before its all said and done. No worries as I will post pix when done .

letsride 02-27-2017 09:49 PM

Well when I put the exhaust system on the new bike, I am going to just use muffler shop wire to get the bends I want, then I will take the pipe to a shop I know of that has a mandrel bender and bend the sucker like I want and get it to fit like the stock pipe. I'm not really into bending the pipe (decreasing the I.D.) to clear the box. I'm not sure how this will play out, until I get another bike and get to it. The pipe is aluminum so bending it the correct way can't be to hard
