Has anyone added a fan to air cooled ATV?
 

If so, how and where did you hook it up and what model fan did you use? What did you limit the amperage to? etc. etc. details would be nice.


I've got mine geared for low speed crawling in rocks and want to prepare for running a fan to make sure it doesn't get too hot.

My quad came with one, and it quickly died. I cobbled a computer fan (because they're 12vdc) in place of the original, and used it until it died. I'm not going to bother replacing it.

I'm now of the opinion that such a fan cannot provide much cooling effect, unless you fabricate some sort of shroud.

No fan on mine but I do run synthetic oil so the heat won't cook it. A 7" Chinese radiator fan from Ebay might work. I put one on my old Silverwing several years ago (it has a radiator) and it seems to move a lot of air with only a few amps draw.

I'm toying with adding my other stock battery (mounted above the rear brake light) in parallel to the new AGM battery to give 12V but more capacity (cranking amps and for fan) and adding a 9"-11" fan. But not a computer fan, just a lower power automotive fan. Thinking of keeping the amps pretty low but more than a typical computer fan, if you want any CFM.

Since I'm going to run granny gears and expect a lot of slow riding I'm adding some extruded aluminum heat sinks in a few places around the cylinder and head. Thermal paste and stainless steel safety wire to tie them onto the motor. Should help keep it cool running slow. Already wrapped the exhaust in cobra skin header wrap.

Those are good decisions. You might even prefer to mount your second battery in front of the motor, down low on the frame. If you ever install a winch, you'll thank yourself.
