Uncorking the Kymco tomorrow.

I'm going to take the speed collar out of the Kymco Mongoose 90 tomorrow. Does any of the other GY6 ATV's have this collar? It limits the little quad to 15mph. And My 10 year old does not like the fact that little mans new TAO 110 is faster than hers WITH the throttle screw turned in. :lmao: So I'm going to take the collar out for her. It should do about 30 or so after that.

Hmmmm... I'll have to check my Coolster 150 and see if it has one. I don't think it does because it is pretty fast.

Well looks like Jr. Miss Letsride is STUCK @ 15mph :ohno:. The speed collar was just machined into the variator bushing. I can't remove it like the quad in the video. Maybe they made that an option for the later year models. Hers is a 2005 Kymco Mongoose 90. I'll look around on the interwebs and see what I can come up with.

Bring it to a machine shop and cut it down.

I had thought about that very thing. But I don't want to mess it up. My thought is that what if the belt rides to far up the pulley and jumps. Or is that not possible?

There are so many inexpensive GY6 parts on eBay that you could easily buy uncorked parts.

It shouldn't be a problem. You can put the 2 pulleys together and see how far the belt rides up the pulley. If it rides up too high just machine about half of it off. But from the picture it looks like that collar is just pressed on. Have you tried knocking it off?

Yeah I did try to knock it off there. But its there to stay. I contacted my machinist buddy and he said he will machine it down at no charge in about 5 minutes. So thats what I'm gonna do. Although her quad has to be down for a week while I'm down there on duty. She won't be happy about that. I'll bet that little Quad has more miles than my truck. I was thinking of ordering this one and just see if it fits.

Good deal! My brother runs a machine shop so anything I need done is the same price. Free. Lol, my daughter is off from school for 2 weeks. She has been on her UTV every chance she could. One night she was riding till about 8pm. As far as ordering the part, It would be nice if they gave you some measurements to see if its a match.

Any updates? Inquiring minds want to know lol

JerryHawk250 01-04-2017 08:41 AM

Please tell me you have this done. You can't have your little girl being out run by your little man. What kind of dad are you? :lmao:

letsride 01-04-2017 09:08 AM

Sorry Jerry, Oh she IS gonna go faster if I have to shoe horn a 150 in that little thing. She hates the fact that the little 110 out runs her. I have little mans throttle limited but I can't limit momentum. I didn't order the drive face in the link I posted. I'm leaving this evening to go to Chucktown. I'm taking the bushing with me and have my friend machine it down. I will report back as soon as the results are in.

I watch a few video's. one guy did the mod and had it up on two wheels on the turns. But you can always set the throttle limiter if it's too fast.

Yeah, I'm worried about that very thing. She has been riding this thing for a long time like it is. So she is very confident on it. But this mod is going to make it a whole new ball game. SWMBO (she who must be obeyed) is worried to death and is not happy about me making it faster. Mama bear tells me that "You know its ok to tell your daughter NO every once in a while" :lmao: But my saving grace is that little Miss is the cautious of my children so hopefully her brain will be connected to the throttle thumb when its back together. Little Man? NOPE there is no connection there. He is all "Let's go FAST Daddy!!"

JerryHawk250 01-04-2017 10:17 AM

Tell daddy's girl no? Yeah right :lmao: My only daughter will turn 16 next week. Wow they grow so fast. But mine is like your. She gets on her mom for not wearing the helmet. And my wife is always asking . What you doing to it now? lol The coolster 150 is plenty fast enough. I'm looking at what I can do to the Cazador 180. Thinking of changing the rear sprocket. It has plenty of low end but needs more top end. On our last trip my daughter told me it pegged 50mph but that was going down hill. She wanted to know how I can get it to go that fast all the time. lol Right now it does 40-41 mph on flat ground.
