I can't get my 2018 kymco 200i past 60 mph. Is that normal ?
 

I just bought a 2018 kymco like 200i. It is only really 163cc but it is fuel injected and I can not get the speedometer past 60mph and I only weigh 160lbs. Is this bike restricted ? And if yes how do I unrestrict it ?

Maybe try running down a cliff?

It could be something as easy as the throttle cable being too slack so that it does not open fully at speed. You can check by taking out the seat and operating the twist grip and watch to see if the butterfly valve on the injection body goes to full open. Another possibility is to check the air filter for any obstructions. This would cause both speed and mileage symptoms that you mention. I doubt that the "chip" remedy is the answer unless the one in your scooter is defective which would be covered by the warranty. A third cause could be a dragging brake caliper which is easily checked. Put the bike on the center stand and see if the wheels turn with only light resistance.

Are they anything like the watercooled 4 valve, carbed SYM HD200?

Because I'm telling you right now, a SYM HD200 even with just under 190 miles break-in as a demo is a ripper, even with a primitive CV carb. They make north of 18 h.p. , and can climb grades at 60 mph. And the SYM's were 171cc. Potent little SOHC engine.


Edited: I just checked the 2018 KymCo 200i, it's only 161 cc, and it's and air-cooled, 2 valve engine and makes about 11 hp. So, yeah I'm thinking it's going to be somewhat slow to rise above 60 mph. like Mathy was saying, some of these bikes came with some silly airbox internal restrictions that held down their top speed.


If you do find the aircleaner box has some big plates or baffles across their channels and you do cut them out, do a plug check to make sure you aren't running way too lean.

Your air cooled 163cc Kymco should do better than that. My 125cc Taiwan scooter will go that fast.
As mathygreen said, check all the little things first. Valve adjustment, plugs, plug wire and so on.

It's still a 2 valve aircooled motor of somewhat low displacement.


We had a loaner bike at the shop, a lightly crashed re-tupperwared TGB R-9, the owner's son had retired. It was a nice looking bike but was, despite it's flashy race graphics, a base model 2 valve aircooled 150cc scooter. And 60 mph was it's limit on level in still air.


KYMCO makes some recently new bikes but they also rely a lot on the old Agility and People platforms, and these bikes, even with fuel injection, are going to be sub 60 mph average, much like the Genuine Buddy 170i cc scooter, which isn't going to make it much past 60 mph.

The Kymco Movie had a 150cc lump and 4 valve head. It would go way over 60mph. It seems that top speed is better achieved with a higher revving engine than larger displacement engine.

My wife's legacy 250 was having issues with smooth acceleration and top speed. I pulled the cvt apart and the weights were worn out with flat spots. I replaced them and the top speed and smooth acceleration came back.

Of course it could be your speedometer is reading low.

You should be getting better then 60mph out of it in spite of all disillusionment.

This is an old school scooter with FI added to it so treat it as such. Clear the airway, put a $50 HP exhaust on it and a good plug.

Hopefully the EFI brain will compensate to a richer setting.

I have a TGB Delivery 150 (the newer ones only came in 2T 49.3cc and were called Express) which needs to be gone over as it hasn't run in a couple years. But, its 151cc's used to hit about 60 MPH max. I used it to commute to and from work year round and for a while worked a side gig at a food delivery service at night (I wanted it to earn its keep). Loved that bike, and waiting for cool weather to crack into it.

We had a Genuine Blackcat 50 a customer owned that was kitted out with a Leo-Vince pipe and Dr.Pulley weights. It also needed an air-cleaner derestriction and main jet rejetting. Would just touch about 42 mph. The little 50 2 strokes were fun.


The genuine Rattler 110 was also a fun bike, also two stroke, it was reminiscent of the old 1983 Honda Aero NH125 scooters.
