I just purchased the bike Sunday, and the bike is scheduled to arrive Monday. I am planning on changing the oil shortly after the break in period. In my area it looks like 10w40 oil will be what I am using, and I would like to know if I use a Synthetic Oil if it will cause any problems. I am looking at the Castrol, Honda, and Mobile 1 oils. This model is air cooled.

Change the oil as soon as you get it. The oil that come in them is shipping oil. Use a non synthetic oil designed for wet clutch. You can switch to synthetic once the engine is broke in. 500 mile minimum.

+1 for humanbeing's recommendation. Rotella T4 15w40 is a perfect oil for these engines and pocket friendly. It is JASO MA certified - aka safe for wet clutches, and has compression additives and shear stabilizers that make it perfect for the dual purpose duty of engine and gearbox. It also contains a higher level of ZDDP (Zinc additive) which is good for flat tappet style valvetrains. Don't let the price make you think is is a poor quality oil either, because it isn't. You could run your bike on it until the end of times and never have a problem as long as you do regular oil changes.

Another great choice would be Pro Honda GN4. This is the OEM Honda oil, and it is very good. I used their 20w50 during the summer. It will cost about twice as much as the Rotella T4 though, so it's not as budget friendly.

Having run both oils of the same weight in my Goldwing, I actually prefer the Rotella T4. It made a huge difference on the gearbox side, and shifting is much smoother. The T4 also held up better after 2000miles,

If you want to fancy it up, then take your pick of any wet clutch rated oil. Just make sure to stick to the proper viscosity for the engine.

Also, I second Jerry's remark. Change the oil it is shipped with. Don't run it on that crap. You can pick up a 4 quart jug of T4 for about 15 bucks from Wal-Mart. Buy that and you have a good 2-3 oil changes ready to go, perfect for first run and break in.

I had no Idea about the rotella oil, and that the oil that came with the bike was that bad.

The oil was put into the engine at the factory, then it sat in a warehouse, got installed in a bike, sat in another warehouse, sat in a shipping yard, sat in a shipping container on a ship, sat in customs, then sat in a warehouse in the U.S. So you have an oil of questionable quality that sat in the engine for an unknown length of time in various climates.

Then there is the question of quantity. Some people have found their level to be low and had to add oil. My Hawk was overfilled by half a quart.

$4 of fresh clean quality oil isn't much of a sacrifice to know that what you have in that engine is good, and the right amount.

If you really want to go the extra mile, you can always fill it with a good break in oil. I added Lucas break in oil additive for the first couple of oil changes on mine simply because I had it lol.
