Wrap Around Handguards

Thought we might find a thread for the wrap around handguards useful.

I know several of you have installed handguards. Figured it might be useful to consolidate that info into a thread.

What I've managed to glean so far:
For the most part, guards designed for straight 22mm handlebars should fit - some modifications may be required. ID of the handlebars is approximately 1/2-inch or 12.7mm and may require some reaming with a 1/2-inch bit to make them evenly round.

Spudrider has a set of Tusk Dflex handguards installed:
To complete the install, the master cylinder was swapped and the ends of the levers were trimmed.

I was unable to positively ascertain models from other folks who have shared photos with handguards installed...

Excellent idea. Let's hope other RX3 owners post here after installing hand guards.

Indeed, thanks for starting this useful thread.

The hole in the end of the handlebars has an inside diameter of approximately 12 mm, which is slightly smaller than 1/2-inch. ;) My Tusk D-Flex Handguards are designed for holes at least 5/8-inch in diameter. Therefore, I tapped the 12 mm holes for a 1/2-inch coarse thread, and bolted the handguards to the ends of the handlebars. :)

i have an aftermarket master cyl, but i run Moose racing bark busters on my Roketa/Shineray db07a sumo conversion... drilled out the end of the bars to 5/8", should have tapped for 1/2" like spud...went thru 3 bits drilling...

Has anybody purchased and installed the hand guards sold by CSC?

SpudRider 06-01-2015 03:17 AM

Fishman10 installed the Moose handguards sold by CSC, but he bought them elsewhere. You can see the handguards in the following thread. ;)

For enlarging the handle bar ends, is a HSS 1/2 inch drill bit advised or better to go find myself a 1/2 inch reamer? I'm thinking tapping with a thread is not advised if I intend to use the stock expanders provided with the barkbusters...

I don't own any reamers. I think you will probably get better use from a 1/2-inch drill bit. The following drill set is on sale at Harbor Freight for $13.99. It has a 1/2-inch drill bit, and it will easily ream out the aluminum. :)

You're welcome, and you are correct. I own those particular drill bits, and they are not stepped down. ;)

The installation of the ones I used did not require drilling out the bars, the inserts that came with the kit fit perfect in the RX-3's bars....
