TaoTao DB17 questions

I bought a DB17 for my son. I have a few simple questions. What are the petcock positions? Is up=reserve, flat=off and down =on?

On the 3 position choke is it up=on, middle=half and down=off?

Is there a manual for these things? My Google-fu is failing me.

Thanks

Welcome!

I don't have experience with your specific bike, but I can tell you that petcocks have been assembled both ways. Quite frankly, the only way to be sure is to remove the petcock, attach a clean hose to it and gently blow through it (not with a compressor). When the valve is set to reserve, air will escape through the shorter of the two tubes.

Can you show us a pic of the carb, to ensure that we give you good guidance about the choke?

The choke has 3 positions. I think up is on, middle is half choke and down of choke off. Of course the positions are not marked.

You are correct, the choke is ON in the UP position, and OFF when it's all the way DOWN.

Thanks for the help. This stuff is new to me.

FWIW, if your son intends to ride the bike offroad, you might want to consider a two-stage UNI foam pod air filter to replace the screen door filter on the bike. A properly oiled foam filter will keep out 99.99% of the dirt, dust, and mud from getting sucked into the cylinder.

Is that a new filter or just foam that goes around the existing filter?

The inner filter is a denser foam that gets oiled with foam filter oil. the outer foam is less dense, I don't usually oil that one, but you can if desired. That's why it is called a two-stage filter, due to the different densities.

Yes, it's a new filter. If you remove the existing filter and measure the OD of the surface that the filter clamps to, we can guide you.

While the filter is off, you can see for yourself what the choke does in the closed position. Rather than thinking of the choke as on or off, consider it simply to be open, midway or closed.
