Our future commuter car (under obama's plan no doubt)
GM and Segway’s P.U.M.A
Popular mechanics P.U.M.A article I doubt I'd ever even think of getting one of those goofy looking things EVER. |
Looks like one of the "baskets" on a carnival ride whereyou get strapped in.. lol.

I didn't see a price, but I'm guessing it won't be affordable enough to be popular. Segway's aren't popular. Not because people dislike them, but because they are expenive, IMO. I've never priced a new one, but I've seen them used for like $3k.
That PUMA (thing) looks like little more than a Segway with a pair of seats and crap. It took them 18 months for that? 8O :? They should have called in Jesse James and crew, along with Chip Foose and his crew. They'd have had one knocked out in a week. |
No offense to anyone I hope, But I think most owners of those things would have huge rainbow stickers all over it.
|
All I heard on the price point was it would be somewhere between 1/4-1/3 of a small compact car so that leaves it pretty much up in the air right now.
They were talking about it on the radio and the spokesman was saying that eventually he'd like to see a seperate lane just for these. I thought "what a waste" but I suppose the prez will get on board with these since he leans that way. The thing is useless to me here with winter I'd be better off driving most any compact car before that. As far as an electric car goes I'd drive around town and to work if it was affordable(4K max), comfortable(heat is a must-AC isn't) and safe enough(not likely) and only needed to be charged once a week and it wouldnt have to go over 50mph. I drive about 70 miles a week to work total so an electric could work if it had a range of 100 miles a charge. I myself am not willing to spend a lot of money on a vehicle that is limited on use that I use to commute with.(yeah yeah yeah my motorcyles, atv's and boat are for recreation  ) |
I guess they are using a compact mercedes or lexus for comparison.

I can't understand who designs these things, and figures they are somehow practical? A lane specifically for these things??? Do they understand the work, money and real estate involved in adding extra lanes? Bunch of Crazies

I think here in Canada, we don't really even have enough lanes for our cars. Our main highway, here in the lower mainland of BC is still only 2 lanes in each direction in most places.
When the lycra clad cyclists want to road race (something that seems to be illegal in any other vehicle), they simply take over our roads. |
Whats even more crazy is they just need a special lane for them IN A CITY yeah right like thats going to happen. It is already to cramped in most cities.
The other thing is while I live in a city I dont live and work it the downtown area where all the big buildings are so I have to use regular roads which of course would be a death ride in one of those. Also if I lived and worked in a city I would either walk or drive or even ride a bicycle before messing around with one of those. I guess more than anything is just how stupid people can be, in essence he is trying to reinvent the wheel but to a more useless end. I just dont get it. This whole thing should have been thought thru before even making a prototype. It's stupid to make something like that AND then go try to find a use for it IMO. Most things are made to solve a problem or fill a need but I guess the inventer of the segway is still trying to find a market. In a nuttshell the thing is a gimmick, a toy and almost useless except to maybe the FAT security guards at our malls. |
