Smoke on the water

I didn't know where to post this, but I am now the proud owner of a cruz lite 2.5 hp (2 stroke) outboard.
It seems that they are no longer selling them. The contact info on their site is no longer valid, but I heard from the guy I bought it from, that they were sold by Gio.
Anybody know anything about them?

I payed $150 for a brand new 2.5 cruz lite, and a used 20 lb electric trolling motor.
The Cruz lite fired on the 3rd pull

I was aware that China was building some outboards but have not heard any details about them.

Is the one you have the type with no transmision? You just spin it around to go backwards? What about nuetral?

Be interested how it compares

Not knowing anything about outboards, that never ocurred to me. I think the only thing it has (because it came with a spare), is a centrifugal clutch.
It looks like good weather coming up this week, so I'll make a mounting bracket for the canoe, and try it out.

A clutch would make sense.
One of the reasons I have entertained the thought of one of these is actually for use on a canoe. I will eagerly await your trials.

Couple of other questions. Is it air cooled? does the exaust exit underwater?

I don't know anything about them but it sounds like you got a good deal, congrats :)

Here is some of the features to answer questions.

Superior engine water cooling system for improved engine performance

Through the prop exhaust outlet for decreased noise and pollutants

Features 360 degree steering rotation for reverse without gear shifting

Only most traditional outboards it has to be rotated for reverse. Most have a lever for forward/reverse and no clutch. Neutral is in the middle.

This looks like a great deal though. Typical small outboards cost several hundred dollars. Perfect size for a canoe.

Yeah, after my last reply I took the time to read the details and found my answers  Overall sounds like a great deal.

I guess we'll find out next week if i got a good deal or not
I started looking for new ones, and after I saw how expensive they were ($800-$1000), I decided to try Kijiji, and found it locally. I hope it's reliable, because i don't think parts are available, and don't think too many of my Gio ATV parts are interchageable. :P

Cal25 05-14-2010 04:39 PM

But if it is anything like the bikes, there are 40 more companies out there trying to sell the same thing with different names on them :D

katoranger 05-14-2010 05:28 PM

You can probably redneck fix most of it. Not too many parts there.
