Hey everybody. Took the plunge and purchased what I was told a 1994 zonshen 250cc atv last night.. it's def. Rough around the edges.. but for 200 bucks I figured I'd give it a try... after returning to my buddies house and setting it side by side his coolster 250 mine is def. A smaller machine.. starting to think I might have been misled and it is not a 250.. it is full manual clutch but it does have linked front and back brakes.... if anyone can assist in identifying this beast I would appreciate it as I need to purchase some parts that are missing like a shift lever and possibly a left hand control switch. Seems to be constant hot now as no key switch is hooked up and starter button functions.. sorry if pics are small. . I copied them front the cl posting. I'll take more pics soon. I look forward to this being a great learning experience and a great source of info.

Welcome!

I like those quads, and I've worked on a few of them. The long control arms in the front prevent bumpsteer, which is very important at higher speeds.

The engine is definitely not 250cc, because none of them are. They are always rounded-up, so yours is more likely to be either 223 or 229. If you give us the number that is stamped near the shifter, we can decode it.

The brand of the ATV is unimportant; just search eBay, and keep your search terms generic, like "ATV clutch lever".

The engine you have is based on the Honda CG125, but yours has been bored and stroked to something bigger. It is a pushrod motor, which means it only requires regular oil changes and an occasional valve adjustment. Very solid motor.

Thanks guys.... your info was very helpful.. previous owner was a little ruff with it... front bumper is cracked at a weld and bent.. appears to be a fmf pipe from a different atv fitted... it does have a pz27 carb from quick inspection last night... it also appears that the pervious owner filled it with 2 stroke mix.. but I did get a minor backfire out if it just hooking battery up and hitting the fun button..... what plug is recommended to run in these? The plug that was in it looKS new.. but was only fingertight.. plus I like to make sure I have correct reach and heat range when I buy something used not running..

Should use an NGK D8EA plug.

Depending on where you are in Michigan, you might struggle with jetting, due to elevation. If you're anywhere near the lake, you might need fatter jets.

If that's the case, a Mikuni is much easier to find replacement jets for, and they're only about $40 shipped.

I might have to look into that... I'm about an hour east of the big lake.. but if I ever bring it to the dunes.... right now I just hope to get it up and running and something for me to tool around on or the wife to cut her teeth on... she's never been on a quad b4. Thanks again for all the info... keep it coming.... I like to learn as much as I can about atv ,motorcycles, basically anything with a motor..... or engine to be proper.... anything with combustion is an engine... electric or noncombustion is a motor... my electric gurus always correct me on that.... lol.. thanks again everybody....

I would counter with the term motorcycle, or the more antiquated motorcar. Also, the law does not limit a motorized vehicle to something that is electric.

Tell your electric gurus to go stuff a duck.

And I'm also going to throw out the dumb question of the day here... drained fuel, new carb, new plug, fresh fuel, checked spark, won't fire..... lots of carb backfires... is there anyway possible to have the ignition "180" out of time... I know it's 4 stroke and 180 truly isn't possible.. but but just for explination I'm sure your all get what I'm saying.... also p.o. had new stator, coil, and wireharness. Well wire harness is obviously not the correct one due to not having key switch wires.. nor does it have the plug for the lights.. new coil is a one wire, meanwhile oem coil is a two wire.. ( they were kind enough to include some of the old ekectrical... )

You're not gonna like this...

62 = 62mm bore
F = air cooled
M = motorcycle (also ATV)
J = 150cc

What carb and jetting are you using?

Woo hoo.... 150cc.... of well... good for the kids and wife I guess.... it has a fresh pz27.. not sure of jetting.. a local shop remans them to "stock". Listed to fit 110 150 200 and 250 China bikes.....

So this 150cc thing is almost like starting over... does anyone know if the 150cc and 2xx cc wiring is the same... including the stator.. wondering if prior owner bought 250 parts and never looked up to see what cc the motor truly was.. also kind of explains the linked brakes.. both front and rear all ran off the foot pedal...thanks again everyone who has shared info.. and those who will in the future.. this forum is a lifesaver ...

What's the stock? 2 (yellow/pink) or 3 wire (3 yellow) to rec/reg & diameter
(Most common) 150 uses http://mall.mxjidian.com/?de=goodsdetail,gid--100030 (88.6 mm/ 2 wire to reg/rec)
