What is the Range on the Lifan X-pect in Dirt?
 

I have some VERY remote riding planned this week though trails and service roads by the Florida Everglades.

By tar, it’s 1hr 44mins on the GPS and 108 miles.

I’m going by dirt.

Anyone have some range numbers for me to use? I have no idea what to expect and don’t want to get stranded 50 miles deep into the Everglades with no way to fuel up.

There is literally nothing on this route. No gas, no food, no water, no buildings. Nothing. So I want to get this right.

What is the range, on dirt, for a stock Lifan xpect?

Get a 1 gallon plastic gas tank and strap it to the rack. Run it clean out, if you can and you will have the most accurate answer you can get. But realistically, in the dirt, still more than 125 miles on more than 2.5 gallons capacity. That would be less than 50mpg. I should think you will get 50.

I'd take a ropax or small can of gas. You might be OK, but you'll be too worried about it to enjoy your ride.

Ok. I guess I’ll get that extra gallon jug and carry it.

What mileage does anyone get on tar even?

I get more than 60 mpg on the highway on the Storm (same engine, right?), but I ride casually, not with the throttle pegged.

IIRC the Xpect 200cc motor is spec'd at 103 mpg. Probably ideal highway type driving.

What you get in the dirt will depend on how gnarly the riding is. If it's just riding on fire roads and trails, and you can keep your speed more or less consistent, I'd say 50 mpg minimum to have a nice cushion. So the 2.6 gallon tank should easily get you 130 miles.

But for peace of mind I'd carry the 1 gallon spare. Along with water and some protein bars, TP, tools of course--whatever you think you might need if you did get stranded for any reason. Prepare for the worst.

With a 200cc efi motor, even crawling along in the dirt, I can't imagine your mileage being any worse than a carbed Hawk, and even those can manage 40ish mpg.

Better take some bear spray!

Hey Boatguy. This is comparing apples to oranges a little, but it's real world figures instead of estimates.

I'm in Lesotho, Africa, so my bike is different than what you get in the U.S. It's basically a Hawk with a carburetor 223 cc balanced motor in it. Right now I'm trying to see how far it will go on a tank. The tank holds 12 liters which is approximately 3 US gallons. I've put 196 kms (117 miles) on it since I filled it up and still haven't switched to reserve. I just looked in the tank, and I estimate there is still 1 1/2 to 2 liters (quarts) of fuel left, maybe more. Out of those 196 kms, about 60 km (36 miles) have been on tar road at around 45-55 mph. The rest has been gravel road and two track (lots of speed variation, all mountainous. 3rd and 4th gear) plus about 3 hours of off road and single track (1st and 2nd gear). The off road doesn't add up much mileage (maybe 10 miles), but does consume fuel.

I think you will make it. Your smaller fuel injected engine will be more efficient. Unless you expect a lot of sand, you won't be riding in conditions that take a lot of fuel like the single track, playing around in a gravel pit, etc. This may be a bit African, but I'd take a 1 or 2L bottle of petrol along just in case. Pour it in as soon as there is room in your tank.

My Magician holds 1 3/4 gal. I almost always ride it off road. Usually it's 2 to 5 miles of tar and gravel getting to single track, section lines, the bank of the Missouri River(deep sand), or a combination with gravel roads thrown in. I've run out of gas twice, but the bike consistently gets 67 mpg doing this type riding. I carry an extra liter of gas in a burrito tube which I've had to use. That liter will get me 15 to 16 miles. My buddy who I usually ride with has a KLX 250, and it gets consistently 100 mpg, and it's fuel injected like the XPect.

I am tellin yaa, you need some bear spray in Florida!
